The 10 Commandments of Brotherly Love
Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Romans 12:10
1. Hospitality. “Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality”(Rom. 12:13) We as Christians need to open our homes to families, friends, those we disciple, and those the Lord brings across our path. We need to invite them in, feed, fellowship, and share the love of Christ with them. We need to open our homes to travelers, giving them a comfortable place to rest their weary bodies. Using our homes that God has given us to meet the needs of others.
2. Patients. “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.” (I Thess. 5:14 ) When the Lord puts someone in our path, we are to patiently listen to them, not acting rushed or in a hurry, giving them our undivided attention. Patients is respectful to all equally; patient with those who are unlovely, or those who have wronged us.
3. Bearing One Another’s Burdens and Comforting. “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” (Gal. 6:2) “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.” (Isaiah 40:1) If someone has a burden, we as Christians are to be there for one another, truly caring and giving of ourselves and time, meeting the heart needs of others. If someone has just had a baby, has health problems, or has had a death in the family, we should make meals, not just a few, but enough to meet the need. Clean their house, and watch their children. If someone needs help moving, building, repairing a house, land, or fence, etc., we should be willing to give of ourselves to meet their needs.
4. Forgiving. “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Eph. 4:32) We need to be forgiving. We don’t all think the same, or act the same, or react the same. Sometimes there misunderstandings arise, or someone might be backslid. We are to be patient and forgiving. Christ is with us.
5. Giving. “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.“ (Luke 6:38) What’s ours is truly God’s. We are to give as He directs us. We truly own nothing. It’s a blessing to give to others. Give of your time, effort, and resources.
6. Kindness. “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,”(I Cor. 13:4) Being tenderhearted, caring for others needs as we would want others to care for us. Expressing love toward mankind.
7. Preferring one another. “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;” (Rom. 12:10) Putting the needs of others before my own.
8. Longsuffering. “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;” (Eph. 4:2) The act of tolerating and forbearing, showing and practicing mercy. Suffering along with someone as they overcome something or grow in an area. Usually this is uncomfortable and an effort on the behalf of the one being longsuffering. Loving as Christ loved us.
9. Admonishing. “And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.” (Rom. 15:14) To admonish is to give instruction based on an observation of a need is someone else’s life. This is done carefully, like you would want to be dealt with, with much compassion, love, and grace; wanting to help someone, not hurt them.
10. Exhorting. “24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Heb. 10:24,25) Encouraging those around us to have a closer walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. Encouraging others to live a life totally sold out to Christ. We are to be an example to those around us.
“Let brotherly love continue.” (Heb. 13:1)
