Dear sister,
Yes! In my new house blueprints, I have laid out an 8x9 room with a 2 ft closet down both 9 ft sides and a window in between 4 feet in between the two closets for a sewing table under the window and this room/closet is across from the bathroom which contains my washer and dryer. This is all upstairs. All our clothes will stay upstairs, no running up and down the stairs to gather or deposit all the clothes. No need for bedroom closets that makes the rooms bigger too. No dressers needed either. I like it.

I am fascinated by this notion. Would a room like this have drawers for folded items if you don't have dressers?

Hello Ladies,
Here is an update, my closet in my new house is framed in, it is across the hall from the washer and dryer, this will work out nicely for me. We have all our bedrooms downstairs and this way all our clothes can be kept upstairs. I can wash them and put them away, even do my ironing upstairs.
Miriam, Yes you can put dressers or shelves in this room to contain all of the foldables. We will probably use shelves. It makes our bedrooms bigger (not to have closets.) If we ever sell our house we can put in closets in the bedrooms and call our family closet a sewing room.
I really liked the idea of a family closet. It's a great article.

Oooooo, I'm checking into doing this one. Sounds ideal! We are hoping to finish the upstairs on our house within the next couple of months, and when we do we'll move the family into bedrooms up there. Our boys room right now is actually a large storage room... It sure would make a great family closet, and it's right around the corner from my laundry room. Oh, I'm getting excited about this! Thanks, Darlene, for sharing this idea!

Sis Darlene, are you enjoying your family closet? I told Daniel about this idea, and he really liked it. So we have moved the boys' bunkbeds out of their tiny room and are in the process of making it our family closet. We need to put in some shelves for folded clothes. Some enameled metal shelves would be good, we thought. Can't do too much wood, as it retains humidity. Mildew is a real problem here. Does anybody else have a family closet? I'd love to hear more ideas.

This idea reminds me of the Shakers who hung things up on peg rails. Everything had its place.

Dear Tammy,
I love your family closet!
We love our family closet it works great for us. We change in the bathroom, putting our dirty clothes in the clothes baskets next to the washer and dryer located in the large across from the family closet.
We wash dry and walk across the hallway and put the clothes away in their spots.
I thought this was such a great idea when I read it. We even have our ironing board and iron in there.
When we find and unpack our camera I will post pictures.
I'm so glad you like your closet. The shelves look great!
We have a wooden dresser one on each side, this works well, but I sure do like your shelves.
Blessings, ~ sister Darlene ~
