I was wondering how many of us out there use herbs to aid in the healing of our loved ones when they are sick. Also what do you use and how do you use it. I know that we have been using more and more herbs and essential oils. I would like to go over completely to herbs however I am not able to do that right now due to the fact I just do not know enough about them. Does any one of you know of a good book that is sound and practical without using the new way garbage that seems to be tied to herbal meds. Any help here will be appricated..

One set of books we have used for many years now are those by Shondra Parker....Naturally Healthy Pregnancy, Naturally Healthy Woman and Mommy Diagnostics. We have found them to be valuable in their information over the time. Ms Parker has a website, off the top of my head I'm not sure what it is precisely...I'm certain a search through yahoo would find her. She offers a wonderful full curriculum on learning all abut herbs and treatments. Very in-depth from what I've heard. The books, through her website are very very reasonable in price. We have a set for each of our daughters' hope chests. I'm sorry I can't locate the website address. Perhaps someone else will find it? In His Name, Deanna

We have a very rare trip to the doctor (even then, it's usually a walk-in style clinic or the ER is absolutely necessary) and we rarely find use for the OTC items. I know we could do so much more with the herbs than we do, but I'm still reading and trying to absorb information (my memory is simply terrible most times!) so we can never be tempted by them (Dh still prefers the sugary OTC cough medicine of his youth when absolutely necessary....some habits die hard, kwim?)
We do a routine around here....we do take an all-in-one daily vitamin (I, one for women, and dh the mens) plus we are on a cycle of 2 weeks on/2 weeks off a daily maintenance dose of echinacea, vit E & C, and during cold flu season, goldenseal and zinc. The children take a vitamin blend and echinacea on the same routine. We deal with any ailments as they may arise. I'm working on putting together an herbal medicine cabinet -- right now we have a small rubbermaid tub in a cabinet in the kitchen for all the herbal stuff. On hand, I like to have at least the bare basics...echinacea in capsule and liquid form, vitamins in both forms, dried herb for tea mixtures, tea tree oil, etc. I'd like to locate a basic list of must-haves then add to it for my families needs.
Hope this helps you some -- may the Lord bless your journey in finding information for your family.

thank you for sharing your information. I have had a chance to go online and check out the web site. Thanks so much.. We use some herbs now but we are wanting to really start using if possible only herbs.. Do you ever grow any of your own herbs or do you only buy them?
If anyone else uses anything and would not mind sharing I know i would love the information
Thanks everyone glenda

Here's a really basic list, let me know if you want more.
Garlic-good anytime especially if you feel a cold/flu type thing coming on. Can be rubbed on feet or hands for quick absorption. Echinacea-immune booster. Great anytime especially when you feel run-down Tea Tree Oil- use instead of rubbing alcohol. Fights infection, good for most skin injuries. Lavender- use as antiseptic on skin damage. Works great under band-aids instead of antibiotic cream. Ginger-use for tummy upset instead of tums, pepto-bismol, et cetera. Works fast. Clove oil-use for ear infections, can combine with tea tree oil to put inside ear canal. Golden Seal-add with garlic and echinacea in any tough infections or if the garlic/echinacea combo is not working. I also use powdered goldenseal to help dry up belly buttons on my newborns, and have used it on various animal babies with success. Slippery Elm-for sore throats/coughs. Again, DH has it set in his mind that cough meds should be comforting....as in sugary sweet. To me, his being a 'hold-out' on this one is all the more reason to get our children used to a plain herb over the sweetness of OTCs, kwim? Once that sweet tooth kicks in, it's so much more difficult to break.
These are the "bones" of my herbal medicine cabinet. I can recommend other herbs to replace some synthetic type medicines, if you'd like. I don't like blends of herbs. I buy the single herb and then combine if needed. I'm going to get one of the 'pill fillers' and the gelatin capsules to do my own soon I think. Makes so much more sense to me for the amounts we use on a regular basis.

Hi Deanna and Glenda, I too use herbs when needed, but have found that if our diet is good, we need less herbs. This past year, my husband was the only one who needed "doctoring". His lungs were giving him trouble so I made up some lung formula for him in capsules. My favorite herb book is "The How to Herb Book" by Velma Keith and Monteen Gordon. It's easy to read, straightforward and no new age garbage. If I need a formula, I go to this book first. A really good herb website is www.bulkherbstore.com That's the Pearl's herb store. There is a book review on the How to Herb Book and they also sell it. Great site!! Beverly

God is so good giving us herbs for natural remedies. These are the remedies that worked for us: at the first sign of sickness I crush 1 garlic clove and pour honey over it ( for young children 1/2 a clove) and give/take it internally. Then I take about 1/3 of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and delute it with 1 or 2 cups of warm water then take a towel wet it and wipe the whole body or take a vinegar bath. Vinegar reduces fever and cleanses body from toxins. Also, we take Vitamin C - 1000mg, every hour for one day but, after second day you need to take it with Vitamin B and Calcium so it won't act as chelating agent. Also, ginger/mint tea with lemon and honey is great for colds, cough, sore throat and other illnesses. I am 8 1/2 mo. pregnant and just today I woke up with a stomach flu. I immediatly made my self a ginger/mint/fennel tea and then later took Apple Cider Vinegar drink (1 tsp. of vinegar per 1 cup of water) and the flu was gone. One of the important things when we are sick is to illuminate completely all dairy products, meat, flour, sugar and just eat raw vegetables and fruits until you fill better. God is so good. There are more remedies, but these work great for us. May the Lord bless you.
