I'm a learning how to sew and Saturday I went to a fabric store and I just drooled over all the beautiful fabric this store has ;D I must say I think I'm addicted and this was my first time going in for sewing purposes. Do you suppose that the employees will run and lock the doors and put a the " closed" sign when they see me? ;D

I feel the same way about our local yarn shop. So many choices and only two hands to knit with! What is a girl to do? Hee Hee

Ahh, those first trips to the big stores....the aisles of fabric, all coordinated and fresh looking....the rows of supplies that make one so eager to dive in....those little bins of clearance and sale yard goods....and, lest I forget, the bins of remnants and quarters. Oh the visions of projects one could accomplish, the patterns and dreams of a well-stocked sewing area at home....oh, I remember those days as a new stitcher and those same feelings of "oohh" and "ahhh" as you walk into the big shops. It's like shopping for school supplies and being the first to open that brand new box of 64 Crayolas
Now, having said all that and having walked down memory lane, let me add one more thing....STAY OUT OF THERE ;D Trust me -- it's all a trap to the beginning stitcher! They lure you in, they attract you with that wonderful and varied assortment of fabrics then before you know it, you're hooked and you begin to find rubbermaid tubs of quarters and scraps tucked into closets, folds of fabric in under-bed-storage-containers, baskets of patterns and sewing notions, every color of thread imaginable. Oh, it is so addictive!! I am a recovering fabric-aholic and it's not an easy habit to break once it gets ingrained, trust me. The lure is just so strong. It's an honorable task, sewing for one's family and being frugal with gift-giving ideas, creative homemade touches, etc. but it can so get out of hand before one even notices it. In fact, I confine myself to only the dollar tables at WalMart now, and only with DH along (that helps curb those fabric desires...men generally hate shopping for material and have no sense of what looks decent or coordinated until they see it finished...endless bolts of material mean nothing to most of them...rather like us in the tool aisle or fishing lure section Now, yes, i say most of this a bit tongue-in-cheek, but really, it is addictive to get into those stores and see all the possibilities laid out in pretty little rainbows for you. I wouldn't worry about them locking you out...they might lock you IN, though so you can shop freely and buy alot! LOL

I strongly echo the sentiments of Sister Deanna. If you believe you have an addiction or can have an addiction to this STAY OUT OF THERE! It is paramount that you not go into that place again. If you need fabric see if you can get some on-line. Talk to friends to see if they may have some they are not using. Actually it is preferable that if you realize you could have a problem in this area you stop any activity connected with it. Perhaps you might be saying you need to do this. Believe me, if you got along without it previously you can do it again. Stop and think about the down side of it all. When you are involved in this are you seeking the kingdom of God first?

Actually I think I'll be okay since there are hardly any fabric stores here in town and I doubt if Tim will want to drive for miles to go to a fabric store. I guess I shouldn't have used the word "addicted" but maybe I should have said "I like this alot"? I do have a friend though whom I know is addicted. She has in her garage tons rubbermaid containers of fabric. She does have plans for all of this fabric and she does give some to us ladies who need it for projects. She loves the fabric stores. And she has tons of yarn too. Anyway, I have some fabric scraps that I got at our homechooling meeting that someone was giving away and so I'm going to make some small projects out of them.

Oh what wonderful memories have been jogged..the first fabric store trip.
I agree with all the sisters, be careful, I was one of those with LOADS of fabric and when we moved, I donated a truckload of cottons, notions, patterns, etc to my son's school for their home ec program. I don't think they will need fabric for 20 years.
I also quilt, and that is a very expensive fabric, as you can get fabric's at JoAnn's and those types of stores, however, KNOW their thread counts are a lot less than the higher quality fabrics at the specialty stores.
What are you planning to sew first???
God bless you Sister Regina,
Happy Sewing, Sister Penny

I think my wife has her own fabric store right here at home. ;D She has a rack 4wx6hx2d completely full. Also a room that is all set up for sewing. She makes all her;s and Hannah's clothes, so I don't mind it to much. A small price to pay if that is what makes her happy.

Brother Randy, bless your heart for those nice comments on your wife's fabric "store"..it sure is nice to have a good supply of fabric and notions when you sew for the family, I know my wicker basket of fabric is getting a bit full, but nothing that I won't use :-)
Bless you and Sister Sherriee :-) and little Hannah :-)

Sister Penny, I plan on sewing a half apron. I have some fabric scraps that I got at one of our homeschool mettings that I can make little small projects with. I do plan on learning to quilt sometime in the future when I have more time.

Sister Regina, I am a quilter and I find it is so very relaxing, one type of quilt that is great for scraps is just a crazy quilt..you can sew pieces together in odd shapes to create a larger piece and then cut that out into lets say a 6 inch square..I like to work on some embroidery stitches then...
Right now I have an Ohio Star in the makings :-) its probably one of the easiest quilts I have made but I just love the pattern...
God bless, Sister Penny

Dear sister Regina,
I saw this thread a while back but was too busy to answer.
I love the fabric store too. So far I just go to Wal Mart. I do not know where Joannes Fabric is. Wal Mart is good enough for now.
I would suggest you stay away from the 1.00 and 2.00 material. I have bought bolts and bolts of pretty fabric and 98% of it was junk It shrinks, wrinkles, and fades...YUK! I've learned my lesson. From now on I'm buying broad cloth it's only 1.87 and their 2.87 floral fabrics. I'm staying away from their cheap table. It is only good for lining and play dresses. Oh and practicing sewing.
Joannes sounds like a neat fabric store. Do yall have one? We do some where, but I do not like to drive far to shop.
Have a great rest of the day sis!

We have a Jo Annes ;D I love this store...but I stay away when I don't feel like I have the money...I have to use the material I already have, before buying anymore...sometimes though I like to go in just to look at all the pretty material... Have a great day...sis Debbie

Joanne's are great stores. Like the Walmart of fabric and crafts. Sis. Darlene, I looked at the web site, www.joann.com and there are three stores around Nashville, Madison, Antioch and Franklin. Are any of those close to you? They have really good deals on fabrics sometimes and patterns also. Have fun sewing Sis. Regina.
