This is an old post from a sister that use to be here. I thought it looked helpful.
We make our own slips and they are great!
Take the length that you want your slip and add about three inches onto that. Cut a length of 60" wide (you can use 45" if that's all you've got, but 60" will give you less cling) to the above-mentioned length. Sew the unfolded side together. At the bottom of your slip, press 1/2" under. Baste. Then fold the bottom underneath 1 inch and press. Sew the bottom hem about 1/8" from the fold. At the top of your slip, press 1/2" under. Baste. Fold the top underneath 1 inch and press. Sew the top 1/4" from the fold all the way around. Next, sew 1/4" from the folded-under edge, leaving about 2 inches unsewn. Take a length of 1/4" braided elastic and use it to measure your waist. The elastic should fit around your waist WITHOUT being stretched, but it should be tight against your body. Add one inch to the elastic and cut it off. Pin the end of the elastic with a safety pin and run the elastic through the pocket in the top of the slip. Pin the loose end to the fabric so that it doesn't get lost in the casing. When the elastic is pulled all the way through, sew the ends of the elastic together as they overlap for 1 inch. Sew the afore-mentioned 2-inch gap in the casing. Voila! You have a slip!
A slip like this has a lot of gathers at the waistline, and this makes it lay a bit further away from your body. Additionally, as you wash it, you may find that it helps to iron the slip with light to medium starch to give it more body.
