How reliable was your source of information concerning Amish and salvation ?
There are lots of different communities of Amish ... one breaks away from the main body because of differing opinions ... from this one even another breaks away because of differing opinions ... they cannot be lumped all together and have it said they all believe the same way ... this is stereotyping ...
Here is something I found on the net ... how reliable is it ? I can't say but I'll pass it along and you can be the judge.
AMISH RELIGEOUS BELIEFS
There is no " official " recognized religion of the Amish people. Some may consider them protestants, while others define them as Anabaptists. J. Gordon Milton ( or Melton ... I can't read my own handwriting ) , head of the Institute for the Study of American Religeon, defines them as part of the European Free-Church Family along with Mennonites, Brethren Quakers and other religeous denominations.

How ever would you personally know about what they do in their own personal lives ? Perhaps they do just the opposite and often spread the gospel ...

I've been "witnessed" to by mormons, JW's, C of C, and Baptists, but never an Amish, Mennonite, or Quaker.
I think the Amish generally keep to themselves, but I don't know.

Are you with the Mennonite or Amish on a 24/7 basis ... maybe they both sneak a smoke ... from what I've been reading here on this thread can be summed up with two words ... SUPERFICIAL ... SHALLOW ... God is much more interested in what is in man's heart, mind, and soul ... the EXTERIOR is secondary ... clean up ones inside and start ' walking right ' then start working on the exterior

You post as much as the rest of us so do you include yourself in your judgment? If you know more than we do then by all means please share what you do know..that is what we are doing. I know my knowledge in certain areas is limited.
Faith without works is dead, you should certainly believe this. What is on the outside is extremely important because although God can see your heart I cannot, I can only know about you from what I see from your actions. How do you know a lady is living for the devil outside of church but that you see them. What is on the inside will be revealed on the outside.
Please know that this board is to help others to be more Christ - like.
James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.

Scripture reads that all things are lawful for us, but not all things are expedient, or good for us.
I did not care that the Amish man smoked the cigarette, except for thinking maybe, well, his lungs probably suffered. - I was just surprised by it as I was out of state, a long way from home, and the Amish and Mennonites I'd seen, or met, in my area seemed to hold very restrictive beliefs and I'd never seen one of them smoking before. (In fact, I'd been raked over the coals by a Mennonite man for my head scarf and dress, that I wore out of deference to them while visiting his wife, deemed not "acceptable". ) A person can be cut to pieces with enough paper cuts and the most unkind words can be delivered with a velvet sounding tone.
I certainly didn't say anything to the old man, and didn't think much about it, except it "floored" or "startled" me momentarily.

I agree with that...ouch Sorry to hear about how critical you were treated concerning your headscarf and clothing. Just as allglorytogod quoted below, there are different people even in the same denomination...each have our own weaknesses. Mine is food, I have a very close friend that is struggling with smoking. We pray for one another. We do not want our weaknesses to become a hindrance to our witness. Each of us ladies have something special to offer and can be a help. It is the same in my area as well. They are kind and evangelical but as I wrote in my post "coverings not to share" they would not even share a pattern with me because I was not a member of their particular church. I don't have any patterns but my own homemade one of the D shaped covering and a boat shaped one that Sister Tammy posted on here but I am willing to share it.

K,
Good luck and strength on the food thing. I don't know where I cross over from overeating into gluttony. I'm sort of afraid of gluttony for myself, but I'm even more worried about the anorexia our young girls are getting bound into because of the unrealistic body images that are portrayed and emulated in our culture. Even glancing at the magazine covers as one checks out at Walmart is a trip into Anorexialand in some instances! - Our cousin just got out of cancer treatments and is SO skinny, but judging by the size of the "models" the Hollywood fashion designers are demanding for their runways - she is just about right "in style". Sad.
Plump and thankfully enjoying nutritious food, Wanda

Once again let me point out all Amish cannot be lumped all together ... there may be a handful who are into home brewing ... just ' who ' visits every community across the USA and determines numbers on how many in the south and how many in the north practice home brewing ?

Magical thinking ? Allow me to state that I for one do not have any magical thinking ... such thinking is foolishness ... I would like to mention that in post # 34 I was merely painting a picture of Amish life as I saw with my own eyes ... this was not for my benefit but for others who had never seen this ... simple as that
I believe we are to love our fellowman and be respectful to each other ...

I try hard with help from The Holy Spirit to ' practice ' what I preach 24/7 ... I am careful what I do, say, and think ... do I make errors ? of course I do ... do I ask for forgiveness when I stumble ? you bet ... do I have a self-righteous attitude ? no ... I believe in humility, meekness, goodness, kindness, etc... we should be obeying all 10 commandments, displaying all the fruits of The Spirit, practicing separation from the 'world', and ridding our lives of as much sin as we possibly can with help from God's Holy Spirit.

My post:
The exterior is important ... clean up the interior first ... does God want a Christian to be lovely on the outside but inside full of sin, sin, sin without even trying to make change ?

Ah but you see sister the exterior is extremely important not only to us but to God. Witness the following:
The looking on upon by The Lord goes past our heart. Our heart is supposed to be reflected by our outward appearance. Many people teach that this verse means God does not care what we look like outwardly. It is quite opposite to that thinking. God goes beyond our hearts and looks on the outward man (or woman.)
What does this verse mean to any who may read it? The scribes and the Pharisees were the most "righteous" and religious of all at that time. They were very proper. We are told here that unless we exceed that state we shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. That is pretty well laid out and easy to understand. We must strive not only on the inward man but on the outward man to be the best we can possibly be. That is one of the basic tenants of this site.
We are here not only to show our love for God but to show others through our inward and outward appearance that we are Christian people who love God above all others in the entire universe. It is our love of God which brings us together in Christian fellowship.
In Christ, George

2 Corinthians 11 : 14,15
14 - And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15 - Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
By these verses you can see looks can be deceiving
