Dear Brothers and Sisters...I came across this article and found it most helpful to me and thought you might as well...It talks about Spiritually childproofing your home and gave a list that opened up my eyes...Hope it helps...Sis Debbie
1) "Women's clothing catalogs can be very provocative for children's eyes. 2) Women's fashion and beauty magazines many times have sexually-explicit articles, and many of the ads contain nudity. 3) Men's sports magazines. 4) Soap operas on TV...divorce, lying, murder, stealing, etc. 5) Night time adult TV shows that are airing in the daytime in syndication..violence, sex, adult language, etc. 6) Movies that take the Lord's name in vain, they that propagate adultery, divorce, violence, pride, lust, envy 7) TV shows that swear the name of Jesus- Most offensive! It is not OK to overlook it...you cannot just tune it out. 8) Fornication, Adultery, murder, lying, mocking religion and faith...promotion of athiesm, new age, "alternative lifestyles" ...just some of the daytime topics on talk shows and movies 9) Songs on the radio that have sexually explicit lyrics and videos on TV that have sexually explicit and violent imagery. 10) Commercials on TV that appear to be so cute...but they have people lying to one another in dishonesty...(children manipulating their parents into taking them to an amusement park, etc.) 11) Old time TV shows that also have people lying to one another...even Lucy, Andy Griffith, etc. 12) Many daytime talk shows that are filled with immoral filth and garbage...with no conscience 13) Many video games have violence, murder, fornication, adultery, sex, lying, cheating, stealing, witchcraft, demonic characters, etc. 14) How about sporting events on TV which promote beer, cheerleaders, "fun" drinking commercials, women in lustful attire, violence on the playing field or in the boxing ring, poor sportsmanship 15) Children's books which promote witchcraft, goblins, magic spells, fiery dragons, etc. 16) Teen romance books and magazines which contain fornication, lying, dishonesty, drinking, etc."
"Spiritually Childproofing your home begins today, not tomorrow! It's time to do some spiritual house cleaning and sweep those spiritually harmful things out of your home. Spiritually safeguarding your children is the most serious job you have as a parent. Do not take it lightly."

that was a good list, thank you for sharing it. Although I think most of it could have been summed up in one sentance - get rid of the television! ;D Happy Mothers day to all!

Thank you for this great list! I'm glad that Lucy was on that list because her character is so disrespectful of her husband and the Ricky Ricardo character is pretty bad. I had never noticed this before I had learned about submission and husbands really loving their wives.

Joanne...I agree...there is not much you can do but get rid of the T.V....I got rid of the cable television about a year ago...we have a little tv, it does not pick up anything, but I do enjoy watching DVDs I get at the church or of good learning quality...even some wholesome entertainment...I can't imagine how I would get anything done sitting in front of the idiot box anyway...To be honest I do miss some of the programs like the news channels, animal planet, Discovery and the weather channels, but it is well worth missing those to rid my home of the other garbage...now if I could convince my oldest children the waste of time they are spending feeding themselves garbage but I raised them that way, being naive myself...but my youngest I am raising with more convictions, which is a blessing...she is only five and can tell you what is bad or good...well I guess I am done rattling on...have a nice evening...Love Sis Debbie

We are often shocked at the stuff we see in people's toy boxes. We go to visit and the children start bringing out all this wicked stuff. Misc. toys for McDonals happy meals, t.v. cartoon characters, etc. Some might say, "Ah, give me a break. It's just a toy!" How do you know? What if it is a door opener to get children fascinated with the powers of darkness. Someone gave our some a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle once. We never did like any of that stuff. Someone told us they live down in the sewer system so we went outside and threw it down int he sewer! Took care of that.
We should be very cautious with what we give our children so they will develope holy desires. If they never know the wicked junk of the world, they will not desire it. It is only when we compromise that children want worldly stuff. You know how people say if you withold it from them they'll want it. That is not true. Inconsistency is what causes children trouble. Just like those who say, "My parents dragged me to church, now I don't go." No, there was something in that family that was planting unholy desires in that child and when he was old enough to rebel, he did. Rules don't make rebels, they only expose them.
Gotta go.

I agree. We need to give children a taste for what is good and holy so when they see evil~they will know it and run! I just had this conversation with my 7 year old-about TV shows and who makes them. Even if the TV show is acceptable (not too many of those) then the company that makes it has evil motives with other shows. Why put money in their pocket? My son was sorta shocked at how the world works. It's a shame that the company that makes the children's video Spot (which is rather harmless) makes some vile, vile TV shows and we are just helping them out when we buy Spot. I must've given my son some good thoughts because while shopping at Sam's Club-he noticed the aisles and aisles of alcohol etc. (we are a non-drinking family). He wanted to know if it's the same with stores and where we spend out money. Unfortunately, it is. I've just run out of decent places to shop and I need to buy as much as I can as cheaply as a I can. Sad sad world.... Blessings, Alice

Amen sister Joanne, I agree! TV is a time waster and the programs are doing exactly that ''programming the watchers mind''.
I liked what Bro. Ben said...If we quench there taste for TV, movies ( VCR/DVDs), and other entertaining programs now, then we will do them a great service and blessing.
Teaching them it is a waste of their precious God given time and talents.
It is important to teach our children self control over their flesh and not to have to have that which is satisfying to our flesh.
There is too much temptation for one to compromise in the area of TV...VCR's...and DVD movies.
Why not just get rid of it all together. People have done without fleshly entertainment for centuries. ( I'm not just talking about wicked movies, I'm talking about entertainment of the so called good source) too, that which our flesh likes but is not necessary.
We need to have a clear testimony in the sight and minds of others. Do others really know that we are watching wholesome stuff on our TV's...VCR's...and DVD players?
If they do as we do and have a TV and VCR or DVD...will they have as strong of convictions? Or will they do less?
What will their peers/ on lookers do?
As christians we are responsible to be a godly example....1Ti 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1Co 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 1Co 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 1Co 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 1Co 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 1Co 10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
1Co 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
1Co 10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. We need to make sure we are not a stumbling block to others or weaker christians. ( even our children or other family members )
What will our children try to watch when were not around, because we have wet there appetite for entertainment.
Entertainment makes one desire more...better...more interesting, something different than the movies, or programs they've already seen.
Do others see compromise in our christian walk?
Do we try to live a life that is a godly example?
Do we need a TV, VCR, or DVDs in our home? Is it expedient?1Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
Can we find more profitable ways of spending our time?
Are we our brothers keeper? Oh yes, we have a great responsibility to be a Godly example.Heb 12:13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. Heb 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 1Timothy 3:7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Heb 11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. Egypt is a picture of the world and it's allurements.Brother Ben said :Children see their parents compromise , it causes confusion, then comes rebellion and compromise in the child's life and walk.
Not all rebellion is a fist in your face, some rebellion is subtle, some rebellion is choosing to disobey God and do that which is compromise.
We need to be consistant...
If a parent says they wear dresses and skirts, because it is modest and because, women are not to wear pants.... but the mama wears dresses that are attractive, or form fitting, or revealing, etc...That is immodist.....it causes confusion.
If a parent says, they are not going to watch TV programs or movies with cursing or nudity in it, because it is ungodly,... but they watch TV programs or Movies that have rock- n- roll music in the back ground, or it has places where people lie or are dishonest, or in the Bambie movie...where Thumper the cute animated little bunny says... ''Gosh''... which is a euphemism, ( using the Lords name in vain.) This causes confusion in their mind. This is compromise!
If one says they do not watch Movies with immodesty, but they will sit and watch a ''football game'' ( which has ''immodest cheer leaders'' and ''beer commercials'', ''rock- n- roll music'', ''etc''...) That is compromise and causes confusion. Many so called ''good christians'' do that.
Compromise is sin.
We need to repent of compromise in our lives.
We need to be consistant!
Try substituting movie watching for activities where you spend time with your family, husband, children, or other needy person. This is a blessing to you and the others involved and your making lasting memories.
My teen age son said, that christians will not go to the movies, but they will buy and rent them, and bring them into their home and call it ok and good, justifying their compromise and sin. Interesting observation from a teen...and he's right.
Right before we got rid of our TV and VCR, we cut our viewings down to preaching tapes, Moody Science videos and other educational things.
We are now glad that we got rid of it all for once and all ( in 2000) , because now we are forced to go to books and read if we need to learn something, ( reading is becoming a lost art, most people would rather sit and turn on a Video or DVD than make the intellectual effort to pick up a book and read and learn.) We now feel good about how we spend our time doing profitable things like sewing, yard work, gardening, crafts, gifts for others, cleaning the house ''organizing'', cooking, baking, playing outside, spending quality family time together....etc.
What peace and joy it has brought to our home to rid our lives of idle TV/ movie watching ( even good educational, or preaching) You can listen to a preaching tape while riding in a car, or while working around the house, etc.
Food for thought!
Love, ~ sister Darlene ~

Thank you Brother Ben and Sister Darlene for your teaching words...Since reveiwing "Spiritually Childproofing Your Home" and your teaching words, I have went back through my house riding it of movies that are questionable again..I have gotten rid of even my little tv that we used for DVD's only ...I am praying that we will not watch anything for the entire summer...As I have posted before I no longer have cable or any type of network television...that has been at least a year...My opinion use to be that watching wholesome or innocent movies was ok...but to be truthful it is hard to tell the difference...a little bit of Mr. Wordly Wise is more harmful than a whole lot of Mr. Wordly Wise...I would like to confess that I do have a struggle with watching movies, and I would like to eliminate all of it from my life...Keep me updated on how you all are doing with your daily struggles, and I will continue to pray for each one of you....Sis Debbie

We do not have "TV" in our house but we do have a T.V. Since we are so rural, you need cable to get any televsion channels. ANd there is no way I am throwing money away by buying that timewasting junk! We have a television and DVD player. We like to watch nature shows and stuff that we get from the local library. However we have watched the occasional movie, and now, more and more everytime I hear a bad word it just makes me wince. I am going to clean out our movie cabinet because with a little one in the house now I cant have that junk there. I cant tell him "Theses are movies for big people" That is just rediculous! I heard someone say that the other day in my house about watching a movie. My niece and nephew wanted to watch it and they said "This movie is for adults so we are gonna watch it when you go to bed." It hit me right then, I shouoldn't even have those movies in the house. If I don't want them to watch it, it is something I shouldn't be watching!!
I have seen some good historical documantaries, and creation videos....what do you all think of that sort of thing???

I have seen a lot of instances of folks saying they still watch DVD's and the like. One thing I would ask you to consider is the source of those movies. Let me give you an example.
Disney, some years back, started a production company called "Touchstone Pictures." Touchstone Pictures was started strictly for the purpose of producing "adult" movies without having to place the Disney name on them. It is an attempt to keep the Disney name sanitized. By adult movies I do not mean porno type films but those normally rated "R."
This is but one example of the way the movie companies try to disguise the source of a lot of their revenue.
What I ask is how much are any of us willing to support these companies and the lifestyle they represent? Each time we purchase or rent a video like this we are supporting the whole sordid lifestyle of the rich and famous. Why would we, as Christian people, want even a penny of our hard-earned money to go to such things?
I really would like to bring people to thought about these things. Take some time to investigate the production companies that have made the videos that are watched. There are cases of so-called Christian companies who are involved in things that are not in keeping with the spirit and intents of the people on these boards.
My goodness, how on earth did we ever survive without these videos? What ever happened to reading books? What about the times when instead of turning on the films we sat around and read books to our families? If one has a love of books one can be anything they want to be. Everything known to man is written in a book somewhere. These films only serve to cause us to become brain dead and stop us from thinking.
As far as touching the nature of the companies which produce the videos it is obvious everyone here has a computer with internet access. That computer can be used to do a search of the name of the production company. It ought be rather easy to glean infomation about the company, the people who run the company and the true nature of it.
One thing that really bothers me is that in almost all of the videos available today are full of music we ought not be listening to. Even the videos intended to be used in the classroom are full of rock and roll music. How can we tell our children, or even ourselves, we should not listen to such music if it is contained in the videos we watch?
In Christ,
George

This list has given me some food for thought. Thank you for posting it! I do have cable TV, but I monitor what my children are exposed to. We watch news and weather (after experiencing 4 hurricanes last year!), PBS, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, etc. but even with those channels you have to be very cautious. There is a cell phone commercial that features "demonic possessed children" - children with pasty zombie like bodies, like something from the movie "The Shining" - demanding cell phones from their parents. They chant and beg, and give you the creeps and then once they get their cell phones they turn back into sweet lovely children again! Then at the very end of the commercial there is a teenage zombie who tells her parents "Now let's talk about the keys to the car..." This little Cingular "Go Phone" commercial is advertising on all of the networks! Beware! Blessings, Sister Janet

The scary thing is that commercial is pretty true, because alot of children these days are demoniacally influenced and they ''do'' manipulate their parents and are a part of this worlds system which is not of God for God or going in the direction of God...Now that's scary!
My son is 19 and he just got his first vehicle, drivers license, and now a cell phone so he can keep in touch with his parents. He's a good boy with a heart toward the Lord and his family. He's a blessing!
I do not think a child needs to have a cell phone, much less the car keys. Teens in our town drive so foolishly. Were always on our toes watching out for their foolish, reckless driving! Benjamin ( my son ) drives very cautiously, I am glad. He's also a stickler for the speed limit.
Good to have you with us Countrygirl!

Here is something I wrote today to Bro. Rob on another thread... I am thankful the Lord is opening your eyes and understanding about the ills, and vanity of TV, Videos, and DVD's. This is a hard thing to give up. So many people just justify watching so called ''good stuff'', but it is still a waste of ones time...vanity, and amusement. as bro. George said...My goodness, how on earth did we ever survive without these videos? What ever happened to reading books? What about the times when instead of turning on the films we sat around and read books to our families? If one has a love of books one can be anything they want to be. Everything known to man is written in a book somewhere. These films only serve to cause us to become brain dead and stop us from thinking. How true! A person sits on the couch, floor, or comfortable chair and turns on the desired program, and sits back, and relaxes their whole body, and all their senses and just takes in, they may pick up a cup and drink, or some food item and eat, but other than that they are totally tuned in. Usually if something compromising to their personal convictions or biblical beliefs comes across the screen they just keep watching and dismiss it as not that bad, or thinking maybe it wont happen again...I'm not talking about dark evil things, but the subtle mind programming against bible principle things. This can be found in the christian Videos too.
A waste of ones time...though it is fun. 1Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
When we got rid of the ''American idol'' ( everyone has one and can't seem to get rid of it) once and for all never to bring it back into our home Praise the Lord!...it was not exactly easy for me even though I knew it was the right thing to do. I was addicted to so called ''good videos''. Now that our home has been purged and free of it's pull for 6 years now, I can see clearly the contrast and I can truly say it was a waste of our God given time and talents and it was non profitable and altogether vanity and a seed was planted for entertainment in our children.
You will be glad a thousand times over if you purge your home and life of the TV, Videos, and DVD movies once and for all...What a testimony for our Lord to be able to say ''my child or children have never watched a Video/ DVD before ( for them to be pure undefiled by the pull of this world and it follies. )''
It does wet the appetite for more...and more...eventually leading to compromise not to mention what a waste of ones time and talents and natural God given creativity ) Children I know without TV, VCR, and DVD programming are much more creative, and satisfyed children.... than those who have and watch even so called ''good programs and documentaries, and christian movies''.Love, ~ sister Darlene ~

Darlene, I read this here and not where you originally posted it I agree with you about the want for more and more. I plan on reading to my children. I remember my mother sitting all us boys down to read the Pilgrim's Progress each nite. I look forward to these times with my children! I am going home tonight and throwing out our movie library.
