Wool soakers are an alternative to the synthetic, non-breathable fabrics. Although wool is not totally waterproof, they do a good job of containing most of the moisture. The beauty of wool is that it stays warm even when wet and it doesn't have to be washed as often unless soiled with solid material. In fact after removing, just hang it up to dry...it is good to go for up to 3 weeks of use. The wool has something in it that doesn't allow the urine smell to stick. Some styles of wool cover are made with legs....a built in pants.
They tend to be expensive, but can also be made from thrift store wool sweaters. I believe there are patterns online.
