Have you noticed that stores will only have a sale on one or two essential items like toilet paper or milk? Then everything else is full price. These sales are called loss leaders and they're designed to get you into the store. They know that you do not want to spend money on expensive gas running from store to to store for just one or two items each place because the gasoline cost would eliminate any savings.
One thing my husband and I have started doing is watching for sales in the low volume months: summer and certain times of winter when sales are down because of people on vacation, there are always specials. Inventory time right after Christmas is another sale moment. We plan ahead for these cyclical sales and try to stock up at least 6 months of nonperishable necessities such as toilet paper. We even set aside money for these opportunities.
We have stopped shopping at Sam's and Costco because they often have hidden costs on other items and memberships. We found that with planning we can spend less at the local stores and not spend the gasoline to get to those other places.
Just thought I would share a survival strategy.

Sister Trinity, I only shop for a few specifics at the big stores like Sam's..we are not pulled in toward the fast cooking items, however, we find that we do use a lot of cat litter for our herd of kitties and theirs is cheap and does the job we need it to.
Sam's also has an aisle that is damaged and very discounted, I have found some good food items there for my son, he just moved into his first home with his cousin and a roommate, if the box is dented its on sale...
We tend to do most of our shopping at Aldi's or only purchase what is clearly on sale and check the pull dated items too, if burger is pull dated, I will cook up the entire batch with onions, garlic and bell pepper and that is a versatile meat mix to use in many dishes...
Dave Ramsey has a website that also offers great free budgeting worksheets, if anyone needs help in that area too.
God bless, Sister Penny

Thank you sister Penny, I'll have to check out that website!
I too shop at Sam's and if you shop wisely you can find great savings. Even if I had a small family, I'd shop there and just have items stocked up. With any store you have to shop wisely.
