I am sticking with the white vinegar in my rinse as we have a septic system and its a lot gentler than putting more chemicals down in there, I find if my clothes are line dried, even the towels are softer, not like Downey soft but a good back scratching always feels nice and they are fresh smelling too :-)
The upper peninsula of Michigan has better air I think :-)

I agree Sister Penny, I love using vinegar as a fabric softener.

I use vinegar by itself too. If you don't use too much, the towels are soft. I don't like fabric softener on my towels or my sheets because it rubs off on my hair making it too "greasy" for lack of a better word.
To cut static from the dryers I do use unscented fabric softener on our clothing where the static bothers us the most. Most of our clothing has enough cotton in it to not have as much a static problem. One bottle of softener lasts us an entire year.
