Good Morning!! Does anyone know the correct dosage for taking Probiotic capsules and how to take them? (I keep them refrigerated) I have read various sources over the internet - - - one says to take them with food, another says on an empty stomach. Also I have read that you should not to take them on top of having eaten a hot meal, as the heat will kill their effects. I am confused.

Hi MJ: I prefer to eat yogurt which has active probiotic cultures, a balance of good enzymes, loaded with calcium and potassium and for all these good things its a lot cheaper than the pills. Can you eat yogurt instead?
For a hot meal to kill the probiotics it would have to be so hot your stomach and throat would be injured. You would not even be able to put that food in your mouth.

Trinity,
Yes, I have no problem eating yogurt. I just have to watch which I get because of the sugar content. I just thought taking the capsules put a greater concentration of probiotics into your system.

Mary Jo, if you do a Google search on "probiotics." you will find a wealth of information. The National Institutes on Health posts some very good information. Of course as with anything there is both pro and con to using them. Interestingly enough there are a number of articles which state that yogurt does not supply all of the probiotics necessary for true intestinal health. Apparently there is not a brand of yogurt on the market today which does.
Incidentally the commonly used approach to storing the capsules is in the refrigerator.

Mary Jo, I think it's a case of common sense and using what suits you. A good quality yogurt can supply you with everything you need in good cultures plus the potassium and calcium that is essential to women's health, especially pregnant women. They help to lower the incidence of certain birth defects.
The best yogurts are the ones you make (it's very easy, you can find a lot of recipes with a Google search that don't need special equipment) but you can get a good low sugar yogurt at the same health food stores where those capsules are bought.
The internet has a lot of conflicting info and we have to be cautious about pills that make "claims". I generally go with what my grandmother and mother always did and have been fine with my health and my pregnancies. Of course it's your call.
Another good source of nutrition, not necessarily probiotics is buttermilk but not everyone can stomach that.

Thanks to you both -
WalMart's own brand of yogurt is gluten free, so I picked up a couple of them the other day when I went shopping. I am going to take that along with my probiotic capsules until I finish out this bottle that I have while I do further reasearch.
I appreciate your suggestions!!!!

Dearest Mary Jo,
Great to have you back with us.
I have had very good results taking a Multidolpholis from the health food store...keep refrigerated. I just take as directed on the bottle. You can take two instead of one at a time. I only up the dose if I am sick or if I have a yeast infection.
You can even give these to babies, (a smaller amount though), I just open up the pill and pour the powder on the tongue, then nurse. , it goes down great! And baby gets well.
I give a whole pill to the children, they use to call it cookie dough, (they thought the powder tasted like cookie dough. ;D I would line up my sick children, open the capsule and pour it in their mouths, one each...they loved it and it made the sickness go away.
We are to the point now with our health that we hardly ever get sick, just an occasional virus, but it never turns out to be as bad as others get it. Most of the time only a few of us get some of the symptoms. Thankfully!
I enjoy eating yogurt alot recently ever since I became pregnant. I like the ''organic, Stony Field Farm brand'' with the cow on it, it is pretty good.
I agree with the fact that yogurt does not supply you with as much properties as you get from a concentrated pill, but it is helpful, and healthy to eat, I can only eat so much yogurt though.
Home made yogurt is very healthy, way more nutritious than store bought, but I've never made any, and do not have the time for trial and error right now, so I stick with what works best for us, the pills are costly, but very worth it.
Find what works for you and stick with it.
Have a great day Mary Jo!
Love, ~ sister Darlene ~

I usually try to eat two of those plastic cups of yogurt a day. It really does help when my stomach is upset.
The interesting thing is that I cannot drink fluid milk products but things like yogurt, cheese and ice cream do not bother me. They either do something to the fresh milk or there is something in it that causes me problems.
Cheese is one of my favorite things. I like all sorts of different varieties of it. I remember when I used to go and visit in Germany when I went into a service deli it was a virtual cheese wonderland. I had not seen so many different types of cheese. Of course Europe is so small they have cheeses from every different country and it is all fresh.
I went one time to a dairy in Bavaria. They make their own yogurt and cheese. We were allowed to have samples of each of them. They specialize in what is called "Berg Kasse." It translates into Hill Cheese. Coming fresh out of the aging room it was outstanding.
What types of health benefits are there to cheese? Does anyone have any idea?
I apologize for hijacking the thread. After all it was about probiotics and not cheese but the yogurt just reminded me of cheese. In fact I think I am going to make cheese enchiladas for dinner tonight.

Bro George,
Please post your Cheese Enchilada recipe in the recipe section, I'm just wondering if it's different than mine. Maybe well make them for dinner tonight, I've been having trouble figuring up meals.
I love drinkable yogurt! Have you ever tried it? I have '' Activia brand '' Vanilla, and Strawberry. Yummy! I can drink better than I can eat sometimes.
My Activia expired in June and now it has formed a tasty cheese like substance around the opening. Delightful!
The other day I had picked up a bug and had diarrhea and my stomach was very upset, I drank one of those yogurts and it really helped alot.
Ben and I love cheese too. We like sampling cheeses at Deli's. We have quite a few favorites. I like making cheese and olive trays for special occasions.
Right now I've been enjoying Kashi multi grain crackers with cheese on it, I've been having Pepper Jack recently.
We were at the Amish Dry Goods Store on Saturday and they had a ''Cheddar Jalapeno Habanjaro Cheese.''
Have a great day Bro George.

It is there!
I like the drinkable yogurts also. There is a product hitting the markets in the US currently which has been around for years in the Middle East and Europe. It is called 'Kefir." It is also drinkable and is supposed to be better for you than yogurt. I have not tried it yet but the next time I am at the market I am going to see if I can find some.
Sister Darlene you can have that jalapeno, habanero stuff! My word, that is too hot for me. Even when I make chili verde the recipe calls for three fresh jalapenos seeded and chopped. That is too much for me so I use one. It adds some flavor without adding a lot of heat.
