I live in a colder climate, and I suppose that may be why my previous experiments with yogurt-making have failed. My kitchen is too cold at night! I finally found instructions for making it in a crock pot, which does a great job keeping the milk warm and cozy so the friendly bacteria will multiply! This one will work in any climate. Here are the instructions:
Pour eight cups of milk into the crock pot. (I use raw milk, but any milk will do unless it is ultra-pasteurized.) Turn it on HIGH heat for 2 1/2 hours, then unplug it.
Allow to set for three hours or so. Then draw out two cups of the warm milk. Whisk 1/2 cup yogurt starter into that, then add it back into the crock pot.
Cover and wrap the crock pot in a thick bath towel or blanket. Allow to stand for 8 hours or overnight. That's it!
*For starter, I initially used plain yogurt from the store. After that, I reserved 1/2 cup of my homemade yogurt to use for the next batch.
*I eat my yogurt plain, but some of my family like flavored, and we have had fun adding fruit to the yogurt in the blender! Canned peaches work well, and any flavor of jam, a whole banana, strawberries.. The possibilities are endless!
*I also use plain yogurt to make my own "Ranch" dressing.

Just posted it here in the "Healthy Recipes" section. I like making my own dressings because the store-bought ones are so full of unhealthy ingredients, especially the ones labeled low fat, no fat, or low calorie!

I belong to a Frontier Co-op and have been buying dressing packets from their Simply Organic line. They are pretty good.

Tammy,
I used your yogurt recipe and am thrilled; it worked! Not that I questioned you, I am just so excited to have made something that I have always read was such a hassle, but this method was simple and it worked! Thank you so very much for sharing. I am going to make your ranch dressing this evening to serve with dinner.
I feel so accomplished right now. ;D We may actually be able to accomplish the homesteading/self sufficiency life style; Hallelujah!!!

I'm glad it blessed you, Joanna! Liz, I've not tried using anything other than whole, raw cow's milk. But it's worth a shot. If it doesn't come out right, you can always use it in smoothies.
