I wanted to share our home remedy for treating babies and small children with respiratory illnesses like cold, flu and sinus infection.
Garlic is by far the most effective remedy I've used for respiratory illness. Adults can chop up a clove of fresh garlic and swallow them with water like pills, OR make a sort of tea by steeping chopped garlic in boiled water. Babies and children, however, would have a hard time taking garlic in those ways.
What I like to do is cut up a clove into thin slices, apply some Vicks vaporub (or the Dollar Store version) onto the bottoms of their little feet, and stick the garlic slices to the sole, then cover with cotton socks. This works so well that the child is noticeably better by morning. I treat them until they are well.

Fresh garlic is hard to come by here, does powered garlic work as well?

I have never tried powdered garlic, but it's worth a shot! You might try mixing it up with a little Vicks in your palm, then smearing it onto the baby's feet.
Fresh is always best, though. Does garlic not grow well in your region?

Thanks! We have to import garlic up here, and then it goes old too fast. Finland is the boondocks lol! Katrina
