Hello! I'm Robert, and I'm from Northern Virginia.
I'm a software developer/computer programmer, single, and a member of a Mennonite congregation here that does not practice headcovering, though we acknowledge the concept of headship, as far as I can tell, but we treat it as an "oh by the way, this is true" concept rather than as something that serves as a guiding principle. To many of you, I'm probably a bleeding-edge liberal in many ways. I'm here to learn and interact, not to pass judgment. I'm attracted in many ways to a more simpler life, but it's not so easy!
I agree with so many of you on the inanity and inappropriateness of most TV shows!

Hi Robert, Welcome on board! I often find many groups "recognize" the covering but dismiss it in one of many ways, i.e., that was just for Corinth, or that was cultural, or that was for a different time, (we are modern,) etc. We try to be more black and white with Bible truthes.

Well, we don't know you, your heart, or your stage in the journey so we'll leave off on whether you're a liberal or not. Many can be conservative in one area, and then screaming liberal in another. Looks kind of lop-SIDED.
Though a more simple life is better, (in the long run,) it is true, there are many changes and adaptations that have to be made. It is better to change slow and steady than to JUMP in and then, (when the shine is gone,) jump out.
Good to have you on.
Ben

Thanks. What I really meant with the liberal statement was that if you knew everything about me, you would probably say that. But anyway, thanks for the response and you are right about the journey, and anyway I shouldn't jump to conclusions on what you would think so nevermind.
Being Mennonites, the history of some practices is before us, with some of the discords and schizms over "outward" practices such as dress seeming almost obsessive-compulsive and something that we want to stay away from, concentrating on the grace of God and on noncontroversial teachings. But its true that when you ignore things, your witness in other things can be impacted.
We "recognize" the covering as metaphorical, in the Biblical headship sense of a woman or girl being under the protection of her father, husband, brother or some other man, but this is only theory or formalism and doesn't actually mean anything for us in practice.
I've felt that headship is a powerful teaching and that we are being safe not to practice it because of the awesome power behind it and the fact that so many people are too immature to fathom it in its entirety and not make it into a "lording it over them" scenario that the scriptures warn us about.
