Hey all,
My husband's side of the family are just nominal Christians, and are not "born again" believers. His sister is having everyone to the house Christmas day however, including her, there will be about 6 people smoking. Her house is small and there really isn't a room I can go to that I wouldn't be affected by the smoke. She also has 10 cats as well and is not the best at keeping the house clean with her pets. In years past when we have been to her house for Christmas the next day I have come down with bronchitis. I am an asthmatic as well.
My husband told me that either I could spend time in the house for a bit and then stand outside for a while and alternate that(We are in NC, so it does get somewhat cold) - - - OR he said I could stay home and he would just go to his sister's without me for the day. He would like for me to go and, as he put it, "take the chance" that I may or may not come down with something afterwords. He is not one to suggest to his sister to have people smoke outside - - they pretty much do what they want to in that regard.
I really don't want to put my health at risk, but that would mean spending Christmas day by myself. Any thoughts??

Well, I am too asthmatic and I know how bad that can be... I would want to avoid second hand smoke like that at ALMOST any cost.
That being said, I would follow my husband almost anywhere! I can't imagine any holiday without him, even though were not too celebratory! In fact I can't imagine not going someplace with him at all if I had the option. Do you think you could do a combination of taking an inhaler before you leave, spending time outside, maybe on a walk, a few times and perhaps cutting the visit a little short? I am no doctor, and don't even pretend to be! But this is what I would do. (along with Benadryl!) Maybe finding out from your Doc. ahead of time if there is anything extra you could do as well!
Hope this helps! Blessings, Liz

Liz,
I have two inhalers and, yes, was thinking of taking them prior to going and, as you said, take Benadryl too. I'll try calling by my doctor's office to see what they might suggest.
Thanks for your reply and have a blessed day,
Mary Jo

How did the visit go? I do not allow any smoking in my home, and even though we have cats and dogs, I make sure the home is vacuumed frequently and all the furniture also, as so many folks have allergies.
We don't have many visitors due to the condition of our road not the pets..but I personally am asthmatic also and would not expose myself to that type of poisoning in any circumstance, they could refrain or smoke outside for the time of your visit...
I pray it all went well..
God bless, Sister Penny

Hi ladies, I ended up coming down with bronchitis right after my initial post on the 13th of this month and was sick for more than two weeks (I'm at the tail end of it now). I did go to my sister-in-laws with all of the pets and smoking but they knew I was sick so if I was in the living room, they would smoke in the kitchen or if I moved to the kitchen they would go into the living room to smoke. At one point I took the dog out for a walk to get fresh air. Used my rescue inhaler and there was still a "haze" of 2nd hand smoke in the air but, thank the Lord, it was more tolerable than in previous years. Thank you for asking

So glad this didn't seem to ruin your visit! Praying you will finish up this cold/sickness fast! Blessings, Liz
