Hello, I know this isn't a recipe but I wasn't real sure where to post a question I have.
I was given an iron skillet but it is rusted does anyone know how I would clean it to remove the rust or is it just no good??
Thanks you, Christie

Christie; You should be able to fix it back up and use it again. If it has some "encrustment" on it, you can clean that up by spraying it with oven cleaner. Then place a plastic bag on it overnight to soak. I have even heard of some who place a dirty cast iron skillet in their self cleaning ovens and turning on the self clean cycle. (Have not done this myself) My mother-in-law says (She grew up in KY without electricity and other modern conveniences) she always cleaned the crusted on stuff from her skillets by throwing them into a hot fire. She says that will burn everything off everytime!
After it is cleaned, you can tackle the rust. I have used steel wool, however, my husband suggests a wire brush or even a dremel tool to remove the rust. The latter sounds much easier.
Of course, afterwards you will need to re-season the skillet. Hope it works for you. I love my cast iron skillets!

on cleaning castiron with alot of junk i sometimes put in self cleaning for about 30 minute. and let it cool down and may have to do twicw but this way it does not warp or crack. on rust sometimes a wire wheel and drill works and also sand paper. also after this get some steel wool and vinager and clean until you get the rest off. them wash with soap and water then dry well and season
