Although I spend alot of time outdoors in the sun I have low levels of vitiman D , around 20, so I was wondering if any of you have had this problem and what you took to increase it? My doc says I need to take around 2000 u a day .
I may be wrong , but I don't think much of the normal supplement pill, all man made. am looking for a better way to go .
Wheather mom or grandma know it make their children take cod liver oil was not such a bad deal seeing it seems to be very high in Vit D ;D . I never had the joy of getting to take it.

Bro Randy Alfalfa is very high in vitamin D. If you don't like the powder or capsules you can take it in tea form. Get some dried leaves and you can make a tea out of it. Cod liver oil is hard on the liver. Hope this helps. Blessings Lisa
ETA: by hard on the liver it can have a toxic effect.

I thought I should add that Vitamin E helps you synthesize vitamin D Wheat Germ oil is high in natural vitamin E. Also watercress has vitamin D As well as sunflower sprouts and seeds.

Lisa , are you sure about vitiman D in alfalfa? In looking it up I did not see D listed it. Could you please share more information on it.
Bro Randy

Bro Randy Here is a quote from my book Herb syllabus by Dr. Christopher he was one of the leading herbalist.
"Alfalfa is one of the few vegetable sources of Vitamin D. Although the sun is generally regarded as the best source for getting this vitamin there are about 4740 international Units of Vitamin D per pound of Alfalfa. This is valuable knowledge if a person is unable to take the sun, such as during the wintertime. Taking Vitamin D in Alfalfa is much healthier than drinking it in pasteurized, homogenized, Vitamin d enriched milk. Another important element in Alfalfa is Vitamin B 12"

Is this in reference to a vitamin pill or food based sources? Taking 10,000 units of a vitamin pill and taking that much in a food based source (example alfalfa) does not have the same effect.
For example Beta carotene is very beneficial in healing cancer. If you get too much though it can cause cancer!! And it can also cause brittle bones. If the source is a vitamin pill.
However no matter how much beta carotene you get from your food for example carrots it will never cause a problem.
The reason being is that when they make the pill even if they start of with a food based product. The process of making vitamins changes its make up and it does not assimilate in our bodies the same way. Take calcium for example Too many calcium pills causes arthritis and kidney stones. However you can eat as many Brussels sprouts and kale for your calcium needs and you will never have a problem.
