I have a goal that I have been striving for most of my life. I want to be as free from the modern world as I possibly can. Granted Caesar has complicated this as much as he can. Taxes, (you never truly own your place) I pay more than $1,000.00 per year in property taxes, I have been sorely tempted to move to West Virginia, a place the same size as mine is taxed at less than $200.00 per year. I digress, other than taxes we have electric , phone, internet, mandatory insurance for auto and farm business.
But we can almost eliminate our food budget. I hunt deer, rabbit, squirrel, and turkey. I trap for food and pelts beaver, and muskrat. I fish for catfish, crappie, red ear, and bass. I raise 2 jersey cows, I alternate them for year round milk. There are the calves for beef, and meat goats. We have pigs, chickens ducks and geese for eggs and meat. I raise a large garden, sweet corn, squashes of all kinds, sweet potatoes, potatoes, peas, variety of beans, cucumbers, lettuces, beets, okra, greens, cabbage, onions, strawberries, garlic, chives, tomatoes, and dill. I have been trying to grow fruit trees and bushes, so far to no avail, deer and goats. But we have walnuts, persimmons, hickorys, and butternuts. We have pawpaws in the woods.
Things we are trying to learn from our Plain brethren, butchering our own cows and pigs. Making our own clothes, soap, and learning to make more things canning. Learning to make cheese. We make butter yogurt and ice-cream. We also are learning to make candles, thats cool.
How about you all

Traveling in our motorhome our lives are super simplified. A motorhome has limited storage so we cannot collect too many items or clothes. Luke 12 constantly reminds to travel light as disciples.
On the road we try to buy our eggs, veg and fruit at local farmstands. We don't eat much meat anymore and rely on eggs for much of our protein. We do fish if a lake is near the campground. Our diets are simple as is our needs.

I really like the idea of being forced to prioritize what we keep, by not only limited space, but no yard to be tempted to build a storage barn . It is easy to get into pack rat syndrome. Growing up my dad was in the army, and regular moves meant regular purges of unnecessary clutter. I try to practice that here, at least once a year we go thru an inventory, one rule is if we did not even remember we had it, it is gone no questions. Sister G. you are a living testimony on how little value all these "things" we keep have

I would have to say that we live a fairly simple life. My wife makes her and alot of daughters clothes. She likes to can , although because of health issues last few years that has been limited. Personally I tend to be more of the simple mind set. Our home is comfortable ,but by no means fancy , still in the process of getting the siding on the outside ,and that is what I do for a living. I think as Christians we can have "nice" without fancy. A simple life style , along with a plain life style is a mind set that one has to have.

, still in the process of getting the siding on the outside ,and that is what I do for a living. The ole "mechanics car is the most neglected" bit. I know what ya mean. I trap and deal with nuisance animals as a side business, but my wife complains that I do not do enough to control the wild critters here she really was upset when the black snake got into her washing machine

. I think as Christians we can have "nice" without fancy. A simple life style , along with a plain lifestyle is a mind set that one has to have. That is what I also believe. To many homes are nothing more than "keeping up with the Joneses" My wife likes to point out how sad it is to her, that people put themselves so deep in debt to play that game, they are never home, or when they are, they are to tired to enjoy it. Then some unforeseen thing happens, job loss, serious medical condition, etc. and they lose everything. Matthew 6:19-21 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. I try to always keep this admonishment at the forefront of my mind when tempted to add some "bling" to anything I own. Even if the so called bling for me is nothing more than covering the seats in my pick-up with camo seat covers, it just is not necessary, and it is only prideful, and not where my treasures should be.
