A professional medical organization is encouraging doctors to tell women contemplating an abortion of its link with cancer.
Although it's hotly debated in the scientific community, data shows that an induced abortion prior to 32 weeks of the pregnancy dramatically increases the chance of cancer, including breast cancer, among women ages 25-39.
Dr. Jane Anderson of the American College of Pediatricians says an abortion done prior to 32 weeks gestation changes the body's cells.
Planned Parenthood and Nat'l Abortion Federation 620x300"And the ability of the DNA to repair itself," she further explains, "making those cells sort of like, in a sense of suspended animation, just waiting to be adversely effected and for cancer to develop."
Although the cancer risk information is readily available, it's not provided to women seeking an abortion in most states.
"And that is because the association has been downplayed or tried to be hidden by those who want to say that abortion has no long-term consequences for women," Anderson says. "And unfortunately that's just not true."
The health and lives of many women are at stake, Anderson argues, so it is the right of women to have the information. For that reason the college is asking all health care providers to educate women on the risks associated with induced abortion, including the increased risk of breast cancer.
