This summer we've been dealing with everything from mosquitoes and fleas, to ants and spiders. I looked around for something less toxic than pesticides to use, and found this recipe: 1 cup distilled water 1 cup rubbing alcohol 5 drops peppermint oil 5 drops lavender essential oil (I used a bit more) Mix in a spray bottle and label.
The lady I got this from said she uses it as a general household cleaner, and she hardly sees even a spider in the areas where she uses it. She thinks the lavender especially repels the critters. I made some and have been using it, and it really seems to work.

Wow! If nothing else your house ought to smell really good!

I know this likely won't be a popular opinion on this, but instead of rubbing alcohol, which carries the "do not ingest or inhale" warnings, as well as is made from petroleum, we use vodka for this sort of thing. Whenever I make my cleaning supplies, I use that as the alcohol instead. It dries to no smell at all, and is the same as far as killing germs without making me light headed if I was to breathe it in accidentally. My husband says if I can't ingest it then I shouldn't clean with it or use it at all. With that said- let it be known that I do not advocate drinking it.

Sister Angela, I think you guessed this one. Though rubbing alcohol does have some health risks, I don't think it can compare to the following: 16,000 people were killed in alcohol related deaths in 2001 alone, and another 305,000 were hurt in alcohol related injuries. Taken from sermon at link below. I remember standing at the side of my (drunkard) father's deathbed. I remember the tubes in his nose and down his throat. I remember him heaving for breath. I remember the desperate look in his eyes. I remember, I was not saved yet and had NOTHING to offer him...nothing (I miss you Papa ) Though it might technically be a good alternative for rubbing alcohol, I wouldn't want it in my home because of Satan's availability to use it for an occasion to sin in me or my family. I wouldn't want to be seen buying it at the liquor store, and I wouldn't want to contribute one cent to those workers of iniquity who produce and sell that stuff. God, in His mercy, delivered me from drugs and alcohol. It has no place in my life, even for homemade cold remedies (which I have heard Christians say they use, foolish, very foolish!) I know you didn't mean anything at all your post, you made it clear that you don't agree with drinking it, which we agree and say, "Amen!" But soooo many are tricked and then trapped by the demon of liquor every day, some with the gateway drink, beer or wine coolers. Even this time of year, drinking is up as people mistake this wicked thing as acceptable because it is a holiday (Holy Day?!) Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1Thess. 5:22A gentle yet sober word, Bro. Ben www.jesus-is-savior.com/Evils%20in%20America/Alcohol%20Kills/deceitfulness_of_liquor.htm

I'm sorry- I did not mean to offend. We have had our share of drunks in our families too. My husband and I call it what it is:sin...not to be confused with a disease that is not a person's fault. That being said- we had some stupid, sin filled days in our younger years, full of smoking, drinking, and drugging- but praise the Lord! He has delivered us from all of that!
I'm sorry about your father- and I really hope that he was able to cry out to the Lord on his own. When I was a little girl, my father (who was a drunk) would let some of the older drunks (his father's friends) sleep in our basement during the cold winter nights. While I understand his compassion for them, I was always afraid to go down there to get firewood. He didn't tell any of the rest of us- we just always had this creepy feeling about the basement. (BTW it was my job to bring up firewood so I went several times a day alone- as a young girl). I think that although we love them it is hard to try and help them because it's their bed they made.....and with a 12 year old and 9 year old daughter of my own, I would not allow them to sleep in my home.
