I have done a little research on the 'net on the effects of baking soda on the teeth. Let me share with you a little thing I found on a number of sites. Well not this exact thing but very similar on a lot of them.
Someone mentioned silica. Apparently the amount of baking soda in the toothpaste has a lot to do with this. On the commercial market the Arm and Hammer toothpaste with baking soda is the best because of it's levels of baking soda and lack of silica. A lot of the other toothpastes which advertise baking soda content do not have as much as Arm and Hammer and therefore increase the amount of silica. Of course in home made toothpaste there would be no silica. From what I can see this home made toothpaste with baking soda is probably the best thing you can use on your teeth.
Another interesting thing I found numerous times concerns teeth whitening. There are a vast number of such products on the market today. It is very easy to make the most effective one you can find at home.
The recipe calls for two teaspoons of baking soda and two to three teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide. the amount of peroxide is not exact but needs to be mixed in to make a paste similar to toothpaste. Brush your teeth using this and let it stay on for at least two minutes. then rinse thoroughly and brush with regular toothpaste.
One caution is to not swallow this stuff. The small amount of peroxide will not harm you if you do swallow it but it does not taste too good.
According to what I have read this works better for whitening teeth than anything on the market and costs far less.

As a cleaning agent, baking soda is less abrasive than virtually any other cleaning agent used in toothpastes. Less abrasion means less tooth wear, which helps keep your teeth healthier, longer.
