Hello there ladies. I have shared this with some other women and I thought I would share it with you.
The other week my washer broke down. My dear husband tried and tried to fix it however it was broke. We could have ordered the part however that would have cost 100.00 plus it will take a while to get the part and well that is not in the plans right now... We just do not have that kind of money..
So anyway I told my husband not to worry. We went to the hardware store and bought some wood and screws and came home and for 20.00 build a wash area to wash our clothes now we already had two good size plastic bins to help with the wash so we did not have to worry about that. Well today was the first day of me really using our new wash area it is wonderful. I have a wash board and a wringer both of them were given to me as a gift. I got out there and with the help of two of my children we had three large loads of clothes done within a hour.. ONE HOUR... Praise the Lord.... And they feel better and are cleaner... I would wash some and then my older daughter would take over and I would rise and wring them out. My next to the oldest daughter would hang them out for us as we were washing them... The lord is so good He knew I needed that wash board and wringer before I ever knew.. We are now going to use the wash board from now on... Praise the lord... And we also saved on the water use by doing this...

Dear Glenda, How exciting! I have been wanting a wringer washer. Where can I get one? Where do you find a wash board? I want to wash like this at our new property. ( Not all the time though.) I had asked Ben about it a while back and he thought it sounded ok. If our washer ever gives out in the future, It would not be a problem, and I could wash my clothes like that in the warm months, most of the time. Life is so busy around here and I would use the regular washer most of the time. I love my close line, it's a must. I love a scruffy towel it dryes better. Our clothes last longer when line dried and are so white too. ( not the darks of corse ;D ) They dry fast too. But you have to watch for rain. It's alot of fun dashing to the line and jerking close off fast as you can before the bottom drops out of the sky and soaks all your wash. We have 200ft of close line. You've seen our's thats what I want at our new land. Love, ~ Darlene ~

both my washboard and my wringer was a gift from a friend. I do know that they sell the wash boards in one of the small hardware stores in our town. Gerald said that he wanted to go down when he can and get me a another one to have here just incase...
It really works great and well it is honestly soothing to the soul..
Now gerald build me a place to wash at on the back side of the house. I will use this all year around the winter time will be the hardest but we will adjust to it.
As far as hanging clothes out we have done this for some time. For a matter of a fact we just sold our dryer as it never got used so why have it. Now with the washer in the shape it is in well we are thinking about selling it. We moved the computer to where the washer and dryer was in the kitchen it works great and well gave us more space in the other parts of the house.
Now as far as the rain there is not much more fun than haveing to get out there and get the clothes off the line before the rain hits. And then on days when it has rained for days well there is nothing like washing clothes in the bath tub in old tubs and then hanging them in the house to dry...

What wonderful memories this thread brought to mind. My beloved Gram used a wringer washer, I remember it so vividly..when it wasn't in use, she stored her bread in it...lol we all still laugh about that.
In the past, I only handwashed all of our clothing, and line dried, inside the house in the winter and outdoors when the sun was shining..in a pinch, we have used a 5 gallon pail and a new plunger for the agitator..it does seem to get the clothes a lot cleaner. Nothing beats the line dried smell of clothes, I wholeheartedly agree with Sister Darlene..I love my 6 clotheslines here, my hubby put up...in just 1 month's time, I figure we saved $20 in electricity with using the solar powered wind generated clothes dryer :-)
God's blessings to you.. Penny

Penny, YOu must have wonderful memmories of Your gram. I wish I had some of those same memmories however I do not.
One of the most wonderful things about this site is how the people here do not knock you when you do something like wash on a washboard. I have found more love on this site than I even do in my own family. They all think we are NUTS... I have been told many many times that we are crazy and just makeing life harder on ourselves. Thank you all for being so kind to me and makeing me feel like I can come here and talk about things like this...
God bless each of you and may each of you have a wonderful day in the lord tomarrow.

Sis Glenda,
Sis Darlene said that I should post and tell you how I feel about your washing adventure. I by no means envy you, but I do admire you. I don't believe that I could be so strong. When our washer went out a year or two ago, I packed it up and went across the street to the laundry mat. You are a very strong and courageous lady to be taking on all that you and your family are. What a testimony!!!! I don't think that you are nuts, but just a very brave and willing lady who is willing to do what it takes for the good of her family. Keep on scrubbing. ;D Your family is in our prayers at this time of trials also.
Blessings, Heather

I want to thank each of you for your wonderful comments and thoughts... You know things are going great with washing the clothes on the washboard. We are still doing it... For a matter of a fact I have to tell you something wonderful. Yesturday thursday I was busy with the yard sale. I was worried that I would not have time to wash all the clothes. Many of you have a large family and well you know that it can be a whole lot of clothes... Well my two oldest children both who are 15 right now. One will turn 16 in Novemeber got up after they had worked on there school work and got all the clothes washed, and wringed out and on the line.. All by them selves without me saying a word. I asked my husband if he had said anything to them and he said NO. I went out side to where we wash at and I well did not let them see me I just listened and here are my daughters washing clothes and talking like old friends.. They were talking about this and that nothing real big but just talking... It made me cry... I mean so many of us are in such a hurry we miss out on things like that... God has been showing us a lot over the past few months. but I have to say the one thing that he has showed me most is how to humble myself and how wonderful these slow times are... Now we do have someone that is going to give us a washer. It is almost new. I am not sure when we will get it or honestly if we will even use it. It will be here if we need it.. That is another blessing that has happened. Sister Darlene, you asked me about washing the clothes in the winter. We will still do the same thing that we do now. We have always hung out the clothes in the winter so really nothing will change. If it is to cold we just hang them inside the house.. If there is to much mosture in the air we hang them inside. We also have and do hang them on the carport also. It does take a few minutes but they dry. Sometimes it takes all day.. But I am in rush... Sister Heather I want to thank you for your kind words.. How sweet of you. I don't think I am brave however. I am just washing clothes. God has been good to my family. He gave me the wash board and the wringer as gifts. He was and has been prepareing me for this for a long time. And honestly he is teaching me something every day as I wash these clothes.. And as I watch my children helping me or like thursday as i watch them doing it themselves.. He is teaching me and teaching them things.. I think also sometimes it is good to just slow down. I am learning with all of this we have told ourselves that we dont' have enough time or enough of this or that. With everything that has been going on here and well as most of you know from other post that I have posted there has been a whole lot going on. We get a chance to slow down when we are washing the clothes, to take a breath of fresh air. To ponder things in our hearts. This is good. I get to pray, to talk to the lord, to talk to my girls. I am finding out when we slow down there can be peace... God Bless each of you Glenda

Dearest Sister, I have just read your posting about your precious children out washing clothes..and talking like old friends, now that, speaks volumes to me, that you and your hubby are good parents who have raised the children well, in a society where arguing and complaining are so prevalent in most homes that are into the "worldly" ways...I commend you both and keep up the great work! Christ takes care of his children, both big and small..and your testimony by just this simple act brings tears to my eyes..I was blessed by reading it..
Thank you... Your sister in Christ, Penny

We get a chance to slow down when we are washing the clothes, to take a breath of fresh air. To ponder things in our hearts. This is good. I get to pray, to talk to the lord, to talk to my girls. I am finding out when we slow down there can be peace... To someone living out in the world, that may sound like a deep thought...but to those of us blessed enough to belong to the Kingdom of the Lord and called to be His Lambs, we know the truth of that comment.
What is time saving, really? I can wash clothes in my machine in under 45 minutes for a large load. I can dry them in the dryer in under an hour, less depending on what is being dried. What am I doing with that 'saved time'? Sure, I can be in the kitchen planning and preparing a meal -- but I'd be doing that anyway. I could be helping a child with their school work -- but I'd be doing that anyway.
Really, all I do by using all the wonderful time saving devices I have on hand is change one thing for another. That time saved by having dinner in the crcokpot, wash in the machine, dishes in the dishwasher (no, don't have one here) is costing me money in electric bills that continue to rise. Maybe some large families don't need to live and breath by a budget, but ours does The Lord wants me to be a good steward of the funds he provides us and honestly, while my flesh-side may groan at the idea of hand-grinding wheat berries instead of buying flour but inthe long run, I am saving in health needs...my flesh-side may be dismayed at the idea of standing at the kitchen sink soaking and scrubbing dishes, or training pants but I'm keeping my hands and mind busy with thoughts of the Lord...idle hands are not a good thing.
It's all routine...the beginnings might be difficult for those of us raised to think we need 'free' time, but the benefits of working with my hands in these and other tasks outweigh my flesh-side every time!

Dear Sister Darlene, I have to say that when I read what you wrote. I smiled. I remember when I was a child our grandpa lived with us. He was a godly man. A Wonderful man. He used to always tell us that "idle hands are the devil work" I will remember that to the day I die...

Dear sisters, I had the funnest time plunging my clothes, (though I did hope a washer would be provided before too long. ) The Lord did not prepare me but hHe was there with me through my trial. Amen! It was messy but alot of fun. I love using my close line. I can hardly wait to put up one on my new property. The towles are scruffy and dry you off good. I like that. Rainy days are also hard for us no where to hang. We'll have a basement soon. God bless, ~ sister Darlene ~
