Walking is an ideal form of exercise for many reasons. You don't need special equipment to do it, it can be done by almost anyone, and you can do it almost anywhere! As an added bonus, there are numerous health benefits from starting a regular walking program:
*Good for your heart: Walking regularly can result in a reduction of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, both of which contribute to heart disease. *Improves balance: This can help lower your risk of falls. This risk increases as we get older. *Strengthens bones and joints: Walking is easier on your joints than running or aerobics (which are high impact activities). It also reduces your risk for osteoporosis. *Weight control, more energy, better sleep: All benefits of a regular physical activity program.
If you are new to exercise, there are some important health tips which will get you started on the right foot:
Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. He or she may require a physical exam or special instructions based on your medical history.
Don't overdo this program if you are a beginning exerciser. Let your body adjust to the new activity.
For the first few weeks, do not push too hard. Your breathing should be elevated, but you should not be gasping for air. A good rule of thumb is the "talk test"- if you cannot answer a question, you are walking too fast. If you can have a full conversation you are walking too slow.
Walking shouldn't hurt. If it does, see your family physician.
Try to walk at least 3 times each week! Start out slow, with shorter walks and build up to longer walks.
Wear a watch so you can monitor the time spent walking. You can also wear a pedometer to keep track of distance. Pedometers can be found at most major retailers (Target, Wal Mart, etc.) for as little as $5.00

That was very good advice, I have recently started walking/excercising again and I have heard about when your going too fast, but not when your going too slow, I do want to see benefits... Thank You Sister Kristie

I have been doing some walking and it seems to make a big difference. It gives me a healthier me to serve the Lord with and I feel joyful when I walk. Thank You.

My mind is so much clearer when I'm out walking, and I find myself in sweet conversation with the Lord! Interesting, how the devil and my flesh give me plenty of excuses to not go out....

It has been so long since I read this. When I looked at the date of the last replies I made .... well I'm ashamed that I have gained so much weight since then. Most of my problems can be helped with weight loss and walking is the place most say to start. It is easy affordable and also a time to appreciate God's creations, as well as, talk with Him. Glad I came across this again. I needed the reminder and hope others read it as well. I read the post from 2006 about sis. Debbie needing to lose weight and doing it for Jesus. These post would do so good combined.

You can link that post to this post by making a hyper link. Bro Ben can explain it better.
I just started walking again, winter is a good time to get started. I enjoy walking too. My daughters take turns walking with me.
Have a great day! ~ sister Darlene ~

I used to walk with my mom all the time.. But we havent been doing it very much in the past several months.. And I sure can tell a difference.. When I was walking alot I was getting a lot of exercise and I was able to do alot more.. Now I dont get to do as much stuff due to getting tired very quickly.. I did a spring cleaning in us girls bedroom the other day and it nearly wiped me out.. And I have the opportunity to walk with my sister and so I think I just need to get busy on the weekends and when I get off of work and just walk.. Thank you for the wonderful post.. Elizabeth
