Is it wrong to use playing cards at all? I have always been taught not to use them, period, as they are used for gambling. But is it a sin to use them for "innocent" games such as solitaire or such? There is no money involved, not even on the computer. To use the reasoning that the cards are used for gambling and therefore should not be used, then wouldn't you have to stop using dice in games, because those are used as well? Part of me sees nothing wrong with using them, but the other part says there's something wrong, I just don't know what. What do you all think/believe?

I personally see nothing wrong with using a deck of cards for an innocent game. I have even used poker chips to play a friendly game of Texas Hold-Em. We never use money, but the chips are a way to keep track of who is winning. But I am beginning to see the error in that thinking. Your question about the dice made me start thinking, though. If you consider the role of the dice...any game that uses dice or even a spinner to determine the next move -- is really using "chance" the same as a game of gambling does. I have never thought there was anything wrong, but I suppose we have to consider the "appearance of evil". I also think that we could look at just about anything and find that Satan has found a way to use it for evil.... I guess the other thing to consider is the fact that those "innocent" games are using time that could perhaps be better spent on other things. Sorry, I tend to ramble on. It seems like I do some of my best thinking while I am typing it down. Great topic....it gave me a lot to think about Weather man is predicting 6-8 inches of wet, heavy snow this afternoon..not looking forward to the shoveling!! Donna

To me, that is the issue at hand. I don't like the image of blood washed saints sitting around playing poker and other such games because "I" can't get the vision out of my head of a bunch of lost heathen at Vegas or some Casino doing the same thing.
We have decided for sake of doing that that has a big "?" on it, to play games like UNO, SKIPBO, etc. Yes, they to are a "card" but they don't look like the King, Queen, Jack, Joker cards and are not a gambling tool, though they could be if one wanted to corrupt them into that.
What does it look like? That is the question.

We really enjoy playing 'Dutch Blitz' - it's a card game where four players race against each other to see who can get rid of their 'wood pile' first (a pile of 10 cards). The cards are cute with little dutch boys and girls on them. We have so much fun I have to joke and say 'it's not a full contact game'!! Everyone is flying around like crazy trying to put their cards in the right spot. We also really enjoy UNO. We have playing cards as well, but they are 'special' cards - one deck has birds and the other has baby animals. We usually use those cards to play 'memory'. We have other games too - like The Farming Game, The Construction Game, Sorry, and more. We enjoy playing games as a family We got rid of a few games when I became saved - the only one I can remember for sure was Monopoly. But we also stopped playing many card and dice games. I had 'Candy Land' for when younger cousins come over, but threw that out as well because it has fairies and other odd/evil things on it. My daughter made a 'candy land' type game with farm animals instead. We also got rid of 'twister' for obvious reasons. We never played it but someone gave it to my children as a gift so we hung on to it. No more though! Great topic!

Thanks for the replies. I am still praying about what God would have me to believe. I love playing solitaire, but as far as poker or anything, I wouldn't play that. We don't own a deck of cards, I just play in my spare time on the computer. Our family loves, and plays, UNO, SkipBo, Dutch Blitz, etc. I understand the appearance of evil issue, and am still praying about my games on the computer fits that category or not. Although, I am still living at home, and since my parents don't approve, there could be the "honor your parents" issue too. I don't know, I'm still confused!

Dear Naomi I wasn't going to comment on this post because I personally don't have a problem with playing cards, except depending on which game you are playing of course. If something looks and feels evil more than likely it is evil The reason I am commenting on this post is what you said in your last message "Although, I am still living at home, and since my parents don't approve, there could be the "honor your parents" issue too. I don't know, I'm still confused!"Dearest Naomi, There should be no confusion here. It does not matter how old you are, if you are living with your parents or in their home for any reason you should honor them and not play the games or cards you spoke of. This is a commandment from God. I think that Satan is using the whole card issue to blind you to the fact that you are dis-honoring your parents. I write these words with the understanding that this is what you said you are doing. If I have misunderstood your post, please forgive me and disrequard my words. Blessings Sis Debbie

One thing I believe it vitally important to understand in this case is that confusion is not from God.
(1Co 14:33) For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
If there exists confusion as you have stated, it is as someone else indicated, the minions of satan working in your life. God will give you a clear cut answer. The things of God are either yea or nay and not maybe or possibly.
(Col 3:20) Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
In Christ, George

Thank you Sister Debbie and Brother George for the replies. I needed to hear them, didn't want to hear them, but needed to! Deep down inside I knew the answer, but wasn't willing to give up some fun. I still don't see any problem with the cards themselves, but playing them when I'm still under my parents authority is wrong. I am careful not to be openly rebellious, well, not rebellious at all, but I struggle on some of the small issues. I'm trying to work in that area, because I know it's going to carry over to my marriage (we're thinking about a Dec. wedding), and that wouldn't be right.
Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble on, but I wanted to thank you for all the replies. God is still working on me, and isn't anywhere near done with me yet!

I was not going to comment on this issue, because frankly all I "know" about it is just hearsay. But maybe someone who reads this will know something about this... I read somewhere that the faces on the cards are blasphemous in origin, that the king represents God, the queen is Mary, the joker represents our Lord, and I can't even put His name in this context. With just the possibility of this being true, I am loathe to even pick up a card.
Anyone know more about this?
