One thing you can do is to use a couch as a divider and make a smaller area for visiting in.

The first apartment that my husband and I lived in had one big room that we used as our dining area, living room and office.
We used the furniture to distinguish the various areas.
As for actual decorating, I find that earth tones for furniture fabric are cozy (at least to me). We also painted our walls a nice pale shade of a buttery cream/yellow.
