Hello all,
Would anyone have any ideas for home-made fly and mice repellent?
We came home one day and there were a great deal of flies in the house near one of our screened-in windows. Husband says they must of layed eggs somewhere. Have fly strips up but they are not working.
Also, regarding mice - - I have sticky traps out around the house. I found a recipe on-line for a mouse repellent (spray bottle w/cayenne pepper, water and dish soap) and sprayed around but this doesn't seem to deter them. Have all sources of food cut off and we have no animals at home - -they are originating in one of the bedrooms.
Any advice would be most appreciative.

The first line of defense for flies is to keep the doors closed and make sure your screens are in good shape. Flies are bad here in Middle Tennessee and we have farm animals to boot. We are always at war with flies. When it comes down to it, we break out the swatters and go after them. I have heard of using a zip lock bag with a little water in the corner, hanging near the door. Something about the way their eye sees it makes them think it is a wasp nest...their arch enemy.
Mice are looking for food and can be worse some place than others. We had them at our last house because it was in the country and the house was old and they had 100 places to come in. Again, isolate food sources. We have used traps, but finally resorted to poison. It was fast and efficient. Just put it out of the way of little uns'

I learned the hard way that Lysol does not work on flies.

Thanks to you both for your input
Flies left within a day's time, so I don't know what happened there. I even had one that I kept swatting at and missed repeatedly . . . then the pest retaliated. I'd swat at it and kept "dive bombing" itself onto the side of my head or in my face while I was sitting at the computer!! It's funny now, but irritating at the time.
We're continuing with glue traps for now for mice and did get one yesterday, but haven't seen them around as much either.

We put burnt rosemary and sprayed peppermint oil in our food pantry to keep the mice out . It seemed to work pretty well.

Lisa,
Thanks . . . I've heard of using peppermint oil - - burnt rosemary is a new one for me, though. Since I initially posted I rarely have seen any critters around, but still keep the sticky traps out and on occasion can hear "scratching" coming from inside the wall here near where my work station is in the house.
Take care,
Mary Jo

the thing with the water in a ziploc bag for the flies--you put a penny in the water as well....I see people use that here in Alabama all the time when it is a business that either has frequently opened windows (like a ice cream place) or outside vendors selling food.
