To make 2 quarts 1/2 cup store bought buttermilk (for starter) always save 1/2 cup for starter. Pour buttermilk in a container, then add Whole milk to fill, let set on counter top for 24 hours, then refrigerate. This is so good and much much cheaper than having to buy from the store. We have even used our goat milk which we get fresh every morning when we milk our goats. Yummy!
We make a gallon at a time.
We make pancakes, waffles, buttermilk biscuits, mac and cheese, and cakes.

We make this all the time it turns out great we use buttermilk in alot of things...
Baking
Pancakes
Waffles
Mac and Cheese
Corn Bread
Biscuits
Muffins
etc...
We use it so often, we make 1 gallon at a time.
1 cup buttermilk added to 1 gallon of Whole milk with a cup of whole milk removed to fit the 1 cup of buttermilk in. Turn upside down a few times..leave out on counter top for 24 hours exactly. It can get too thick if it sits out longer (it can still be used if it's thick though.)
Fresh Cows Milk needs to have some of the cream removed or it will turn out like butter milk with sour cream in it. ( which is still usable )
