Just wondering whether anyone has a good recipe for pastry? My grandmother used to make the best homemade pastry but she never wrote down the recipe nor told anyone. At the moment my family is trying to work out what it was so that we can make pies and things without having to by frozen pastry from the supermarket, but so far all that we can make is this horrible hard biscuit-like stuff which almost breaks the teeth.

1.25 cups flour .5 lb butter 2 T. coconut oil 1t. brown suger .5 t. salt .5 cup ice cold water
Blend half of the flour and coconut oil with the salt in food processor. Repeat above with brown sugar instead of salt. Place everything in mixer bowl except butter and water. Chop butter in small pieces and mix in until solid and no longer crumbly. Add ice cold water and mix until just mixed in.
The key to any good pastry is for everything to start and remain as cold as possible. The use of a food processor makes the process quicker and therefore keeps everything colder. It also helps to chill the bowls. This can be made without the coconut oil, but it won't be as light and fluffy.
