Hi everyone! I was wondering, who uses a traditional calendar (roughly August to May or September to June) for their homeschooling and who schools year-round? Or some other combination?
We are pretty much year-round. It gives us more flexibility during the school year, which I like if we want to travel with hubby or the kids need an extra day at Grandma's house!
What's it like in your house?
Blessings, Sister Rachel

Traditional. We like the children to be in school when the public schooler's are in and out when they are out. It is a good testimony. Some (who don't like homeschool) don't like to see your children out when their children are in. It is good to be wise.

I like year-round because if you work really hard and alittle extra, then you can get your work for that grade done! Jordyn

I do late Jan/ early Feb until late Nov/ early Dec. That's how the school year works here - most schools run from the 27th of January (day after Australia Day Public Holiday) until about 8th of December. There are four 10-week terms with 2-week holidays in between, with 6 or 7 weeks over Summer/Christmas. I do correspondence, and we're a little different because we need to allow time at the beginning and end of each semester for books and such to be posted. I don't usually start until early February, finish mid-June, start mid-August, and finish mid-November.
I like having the longer break over summer because it gets too hot in the schoolroom otherwise, even with a fan going! I sometimes wish the longer break could last until March because it's still hot then too, but it's better at home because we're allowed to find somewhere cool to do our work - it was horrible at school because few schools have good airconditioning, and we still had to keep working even though it was about 45 degrees (Celsius) in the classroom!
One thing I do do year-round is violin. I used to do piano year-round too, but then my teacher changed and she runs on school time. My violin teacher is homeschooled herself and I don't think her family held much for the school timetable, so we don't bother. It's better that way, because for an instrument it's good to have consistent lessons rather than random gaps. It's not so bad for piano as I've been playing longer.

We do almost year round... August to June and take one month off for July, so we can "officially say, one grade has ended before another started.
We take a few days off for Christmas and other than that.... It's more relaxed for them "Lazy Days" or Days that we just had plans... I still usually finish about 220 days per grade vrs. 180 required.
