The problem in dealing with abuse by priests in the Roman Catholic Church, according to one expert, is in the hierarchy.
Aside from the Pennsylvania abuse of children and teens by priests, and scandals involving a few bishops and cardinals, storm clouds are gathering over another issue: newly appointed Mexican Cardinal Sergio Obeso Rivera has suggested that victims accusing priests of their sins ought to be "ashamed" to have done so and ought to be dealing with their own sins.
The victims of pedophilia who "accuse men of the Church should [be careful] because they have long tails that are easily stepped on," said Rivera.
OneNewsNow contacted Michael Hichborn of the Lepanto Institute for a response.
"Cardinal Obeso just confirmed every single Catholic in their anger over the abuse and cover-ups," says Hichborn. "And the fact of the matter is Catholics are fed up: stop the victim-shaming, stop deflecting – and for the love of God, stop lying."
That plea goes up as high as to the Vatican. Hichborn says the abuse cases really represent "crimes that cry to Heaven for vengeance."
"And for Pope Francis to come out with a letter recently saying that the problem is clericalism? I'm sorry, but the victims that we're talking about are not victims of clericalism: they're victims of sodomy," Hichborn states bluntly.
"If we're going to talk about what the real cause of the problem is, we should call it what it is: homo-clericalism – because that's exactly what we're talking about," he concludes.
Hichborn has also reported extensively for several years on how Catholic funds are handed to organizations that promote issues contrary to doctrine – i.e., homosexual groups and others that promote contraception and abortion.
