I have always been taught that the Church was first started with Jesus Christ and His disciples. I have recently come across some christians that say the church started with the apostle Paul. They claim that Jesus was preaching to issue in the Kingdom but because Israel rejected Him, He sent Paul out to start the church with the Gentiles. I'm very confused about this and was wondering what you all believe. Thanks so much.

Some say the church started on the day of Pentecost, others have other opinions as well. Some think the "church" is universal..others do not. Some teach a church is made up of saved people....others teach a church is made up of saved, baptized believers....there are a few ideas out there. Do we have any plain scripture teaching us when the church started? I am just as curious as to what you all think as Andrea.

Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
oikodomeo, Grk, to build a house, erect a building
a) to build (up from the foundation)
b) to restore by building, to rebuild, repair
In the previous verse Christ said he will build his church and the next time he mentions the church, he is giving instructions regarding discipline in the church
Mat 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell [it] unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
The elements necessary for a church are baptized believers and a pastor/teacher. If you look at Christ and his believers, you have everything necessary. But, one might say the Holy Spirit has not yet been issued. Christ said,
Jhn 14:26 But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Jhn 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: Jhn 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
The way I see it, Christ did all that the Spirit of God would do in the area of teaching and conviction. This is what I was taught and I am comfortable with it, but leave room to be corrected if need be.

Amen, Bro. Ben. I think the Scripture is clear, that Christ established His church during His earthly ministry.

I think this makes some sense.
