Dear Sisters,
One thing I teach my middle school children is basic medical skills.
How to remove a splinter: clean surface, open top surface and squeeze out, put on tee tree oil.
How to clean and treat a cut, we clean with warm water and dial soap, we keep povidone iodine solution 10%, alcohol, peroxide, triple antibiotic ointment on hand. We also keep band aids, gauze pads, medical tape (cloth tape), also tea tree oil, Campho phenique (great stuff) on hand.
How to stop a bruise from being to dark, When the bruise first happens apply pressure to bruised area, this stops bleeding under the skin and the bruising is not too bad after that. This really works well.
How to treat a burn I have found that grabbing a bag of mixed veggies out of the freezer and placing on the burn works well for a fast ice bag. Also a pitcher of ice water or a cup of ice water is good for soaking the burn in. It is good to start cooling the burn down as fast as possible. Tea Tree oil is also very good to put on a burn it really helps and works well.
We keep a medical bucket stocked with helpful things:
Tea tree oil ( very good)
Campho phenique Pain relieving Antiseptic Liquid ( great stuff)
Witch hazel ( all natural Astringent ) We pour over minor scrapes and cuts to clean off.
Hydrocortisone 1% cream
Anti- itch cream ( antihistamine)
Triple antibiotic ointment
Povidone iodine solution 10%
Alcohol
Peroxide
note: I bought two small (travel size) hair spray bottles and emptied and rinsed real good with hot water many times, then I removed the labels and with a permanent marker I wrote Alcohol on one bottle and peroxide on the other and then filled with the corresponding fluids. This is a good way to have it on hand, it is small and you can spray it on the wound.
Epsom salt If you have aches and pains you can put 2 or more cups in your warm bath water and soak for 20 - 30 min or soak an ankle or foot in a bucket with Epsom salt added to the water or you can soak a rag and place on sore area and leave on a short while.
Sterile eye drops ( this is good to flush the eye with when something minor is irritating it)
Calamine lotion
Calamine clear gel is also good more sticky though I prefer the pink stuff.
Cala gel ( Oak and Ivy brand) this will stop poison Oak, Ivy, and Sumac oozing and weeping!) It really works too! My husband puts in radio equipment for the government, and all their agents have this provided for them in their cars to help stop the effects of Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac as these agents often come in contact with these elements. This is excellent stuff, I highly recommend it! It cost about 5.00 a bottle and is well worth it.
Zinc oxide ointment ( this is great stuff ) I also use it on diaper rash.
Blistex ( Lip Medex brand in the blue bottle ) This is great stuff for fever blisters, it really works. L- Lysine is also good for fever blisters and mouth sores take as directed on the bottle. ( needs to be taken on an empty stomach)
Baby aspirin This is helpful if needed ( but rarely)
Aspirin Only if needed
Fletcher's Laxative This is helpful if needed
Anbesol and Anbisol Jr This is helpful if needed
Benidril antihistamine This is helpful if needed
Robitussin PE ( I only use this is a chest congestion seems to be progressing) It has helped also with my daughters asthma ''only if she seems to be having trouble''
Unkers ( deep penetrating all natural ingredients
Ace Bandage
orange Dial soap ( bar type)
That is just a few things I keep on hand
I also keep:...........
Garlic Gel caps
Papaya Enzymes ( my oldest son has reflux and this really helps, he takes 3 or 4 after he eats, it helps digest his food) When he was 7 we went on the Fit for life Diet and a Hallelujah acres diet and my son acquired this awful condition. I do not think it is good for small children to eat this kind of restrictive diet.
Multi Vit
Vit E
Chewable Vit C 500 mg
Acidophilus
Multidophilus
Goldenseal ( only used when really needed )
Echinacea
Powdered buffered Vit C high potency ( only when needed)
I only buy mine from the health food store not from Wal Mart or GNC they mostly sell synthetic ''man made and not all natural.
It is good for children to learn basic medical techniques. Even small children should know to how to wash with dial soap and run tell their mommy or daddy or older sibling when they get a scrape or other boo boo.
You can buy a good family medicle book to help you know how to treat these minor medical needs.
Always keep an eye on the scrape or cut or even burn ( any irritation) Look for redness that seems to be getting worse or if a fever starts, or if you see red streakes this needs a doctors attention. Most minor things can be treated at home.
You can always call your Doctor for advice, they often will give you advice for simple things to do at home, to care for minor things.
Hope that was helpful.
Homeschool teaches much more than just The three R's Even if your child does not homeschool they should learn basic medical techniques.
