I saw the COOLEST thing this past Saturday afternoon…and no, it had nothing to do with college football either!
I was outside with the kids and I saw something flying over and told my wife, "I think it is an eagle." She asked me if I was sure, and I pointed out that it was way bigger than a hawk and was flying alone, which buzzards typically don't do…and was way higher than buzzards tend to fly.
I ran into the house for the digital camera to grab a few pictures and got out in time to snap a few before I saw something REALLY COOL! This bird continued to soar and circle and then suddenly it changed directions, tucked its wings and dove behind the tree line only to re-emerge a few minutes later and fly off to the south. At that point I was pretty sure it was an eagle, but wanted to make sure so I called a church member who is a forester and wild life worker.
Troy didn't get to call me back until later that night, and he assured me that we do have some eagles nesting in our area, and that me seeing that eagle tuck its wings and dive like that is some that is rarely seen.
Isaiah 40:31 says, "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall moutn up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." This is one of those verses I memorized shortly after becoming a Christian when I was 18, and many other believers look to for encouragement and to be uplifted…but I really didn't understand it until this past Saturday.
Have you ever seen a humming bird? I get tired just watching them moving at their high speeds and non-stop. Or how about any average size bird, let's say a robin, flying around. Ever notice how their flight patterns aren't exactly on the straight and narrow? But this eagle on the other hand, was soaring with ease, almost floating on the air with its vast wing span.
When we wait on the Lord, when we are patient and put our faith in Him, it's like we are soaring on the air, effortlessly and with ease. Instead, we want to be like the humming bird, flying around non-stop trying to force God to answer us right here and right now. Or like the that robin, we just fly in circles, here and there in hopes of finding what we are looking for. The sad thing is, when we find what we want…it's not what God had planned.
But when we WAIT on the Lord, we soar! We run with out being weary and walk without being faint. He gives us the strength!
One other thing about this eagle, watching it dive down the way it did; that also spoke to me. When God gives us an answer, we need to dive right into whatever it is He has called us into. When He gives that vision, we need to jump right on in, attacking it with all we have. No hesitation, just faith. Faith means risk, but it is a risk that is well worth it.
When we follow God with reckless abandon it is not all for loss…in fact, if anything, it is the total opposite. Only then do we have everything to gain and nothing to lose! Are you ready to fly like an eagle, or would you rather just stay grounded with the rest of the turkeys?
