Hi, sisters! I was looking at fabric yesterday to make some new dresses, and I was wondering what the difference between quilting fabric and ordinary fabric is. Is it thinner and thus not worth making into a dress, or would it be OK for clothing construction? Thanks so much Love in Christ, Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I've used quilting fabric in the past to make dresses/skirts with no problem. There are various qualities of quilting fabric so be careful there.
And I've only ever found 100% cotton so I've always been sure to prewash and shrink it (be sure to purchase a little extra fabric to allow for the shrinkage).
I have a tendency to purchase the lower quality fabric for play dresses (for my girls, and working around the house dresses for me) so I don't mind if they get terribly dirty. I'll pay a little more for the greater quality fabric to make regular day and church dresses.

Hi Sarah, I also use quilting fabric for dresses, I do find that the 100% cotton does wear out a lot faster than a poly blend or a poly.
There is a new store that is ran by Amish near me here in MIchigan and they will do mail order of dress fabrics, Whispering Pines Country Store 8153 E. Skeels Road, Fremont, MI 49412 or call 231-924-0991, Mr & Mrs David Swarey run the store. I visit there frequently, they also have bulk grains, sewing notions, etc. she does have a little bit of quilting cottons too.
God bless, Sister Penny
