Hi sisters and brothers, I have a 3 and a half year old who is now going to a wonderful Christian school, and I have been very happy with what she is learning, but I keep running into the teachers outside of the school and see them living differently than they teach, and this concerns me. I have been considering doing home schooling, but don't have a clue where to start. Please help!! It seems that most of you do homeschool, and I would greatly, greatly appreciate your guidance and tips and whatever else you would like to offer. Blessings!! Sister Debbie S.

Dear Sister Debbie, For a 3 1/2 yr old, there are lots of fun learning activities she could be doing at home! There are many books available at the library that give ideas for preschool activities for teaching coordination, recognizing shapes, letters & numbers, etc. You can go to Walmart and find all sorts of educational coloring books and workbooks. Get you some raisins or Cheerios for counting. You're all set! Rod & Staff publishers have a sweet (not to mention inexpensive) little set of preschool workbooks for coloring, counting and reading. www.rodstaff.com/cgi-bin/ras/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=thispage&thispage=grade-1.html&ORDER_ID=149635613But really, preschool at home is so easy, and so much fun for Moms to do. Why let anyone else have the privilege? Blessings~

Hi Sister Tammy, yes, I agree. There is so much to be done and so much fun to be had, but truly I am completely imagination-challenged!! ;D How in the world do I teach?? I don't even know how to have fun!! I grew up where there was work and school, but fun consisted of riding a bike after supper. I don't know how to begin! I truly want to do this and I really have been led to do it, but I am so completely clueless!!! I need some real minute by minute guidance! Sister Debbie S.

How 'bout a lot of prayer too? You say you have no imagination. The Bible says:
(Jas 1:5) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
I sincerely believe this is an indication of God giving wisdom in any and all instances. It is not limited by any of the language in this verse or in any of the other verses in James 1.
In Christ, George

Thank you so much George. Yes, a lot of prayer for this and everything. I have been guilty of not praying as much or as often as I should. Thank you for reminding me of this.
In Christ, Sister Debbie S.

Sister Debbie... this is the best years of homeschooling in my opinion I also have a hard time with "fun" and I'm even worse with imagination things I have done with my oldest and do with my 2 and a half year old things like worksheets and flash cards. We also do a lot of crafts. Coloring, painting, widgets (everyone needs widgets in my opinion, see timberdoodle.com ) blocks... and everyday things:) There are counting, shapes, and colors everywhere! sort silverware to be put away...count the grapes at lunch talk about the color of the plate.. that sort of thing.....I think they've learned the best that way anyway, but the worksheets are good for "testing" per se. Hi Debbie S.....
My name is Debbie also....I also home school, but I also work full time. The Lord has blessed me with family that helps with my daughter's schooling so I don't have to place her in public school or private. I love home schooling. I have used ABEKA for the last two years. It is kinda of expensive, but I like it so far. I am going to a home schooling curriculum fair this June over in Western Washington. They are so much fun. You can really get lost in the huge selection of curriculum that is available. The other sisters here use other curriculum that works as well, but I like ABEKA, it works well for us. Enjoy! Sis Debbie

this is old I know but...I agree with the others pre-school does not have to be rigid. However, if you are more comfortable with a cirriculum then I recommend rod and staff or Abeka. I know Abeka has K-3 for three year olds and K-4 for four year olds. my kids did this and loved it. and they give you step by step minute by minute instructions on how to teach it too. even what to say Hope you find the confidence and support to homeschool.

I use the Classical method. I use a lot of 19th century books.
