I would like to share something with you I got from a friend yesterday. I did not even know this woman was a christian but she has written what I see to be an excellent little poem on the subject.
When I say, "I am a Christian," I'm not shouting, "I'm clean livin'." I'm whispering, "I was lost, Now I'm found and forgiven."
When I say, "I am a Christian," I don't speak of this with pride. I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.
When I say, "I am a Christian," I'm not trying to be strong. I'm professing that I'm weak And need His strength to carry on.
When I say, "I am a Christian," I'm not bragging of success. I'm admitting I have failed And need God to clean my mess.
When I say, "I am a Christian," I'm not claiming to be perfect, My flaws are far too visible But, God believes I am worth it.
When I say, "I am a Christian," I still feel the sting of pain. I have my share of heartaches So I call upon His name.
When I say, "I am a Christian," I'm not holier than thou, I'm just a simple sinner Who received God's good grace, somehow!
~Maya Angelou

Brother, this is a very beautiful poem. Would you mind asking her if I could have her permission to read that to a congregation some time, I will credit her with it by name.

It does have a powerful message do you think you friend would mind if I pass it along.
I have seen this poem before but author unkown was printed at the bottom. Is she the author if so I will find the other source and have them get in contact with you so she can get credit where credit is due!!

In response to the requests about the prayer: As you can see at the bottom the authorship is credited to Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou is a rather noted current day poet. I said in the original post I did not know she was a Christian. The reason is that if I recall correctly she delivered some kind of address at Bill Clinton's inauguration.
The poem was sent to me by a Christian brother. Because of the person who delivered it to me I believe it to be in the public domain. If not then the person who sent it to me is guilty of theft by unauthorized use of copyrighted material. I would not like to think a Christian brother would be responsible for such an action.
I am particularly curious about the fact it appeared somewhere else marked that the author was unknown. Perhaps it is an older thing that Maya Angelou repeated sometime and was given credit for.
Let your conscience (which is actually the voice of the Holy Spirit) be your guide.
Yours in Christ, George
