My wife and I are beginning the process of adopting one or more children from Ukraine. We had considered using an adoption agency, but are leaning heavily towards an independent adoption (there is a woman who specializes in assisting those doing independent Ukrainian adoptions).
We are curious if anyone on the board has ever adopted internationally and/or independently (without an agency). We have also been curious how adopted children adapt to such radical changes.
If you have any experience in this area, we would love to hear from you.

We have some friends that adopted a youngster from Russia just a few years ago.
If I remember correctly, it was somewhat lengthy and rather expensive. They had to go and stay over there for about 3 weeks while all the paperwork was being done. I'm not sure about the actual dollar cost, but can you put a price on a child?
He was just a little fellow, maybe 18 months old when they got him. He had some illness, etc., that probably wouldn't have been encountered here (some sort of liver ailment). All in all though, he was a healthy one.
He is now a very well adjusted young lad, and about as cute as he could be. One strange thing that I wouldn't have thought about: Even that young, being from Russia, he had never heard English before. He spent a lot of time just looking at them (our friends) strange whenever they would speak. Even though he was too young to understand a whole lot, he was used to hearing Russian. I think there were just some things that they noticed about him that they they attributed to him being in an orphanage and not having a whole bunch of love and attention, but it hasn't caused any problems that I am aware of. It's a good move.....and we'll keep you in our prayers.

We checked into adopting 3 little brothers from Guatemala but we just couldn't afford it. We prayed about it but it just didn't seem to be what the Lord wanted at that time. I will pray for you concerning this.
