Clause 61 : Hatred against persons on grounds of sexual orientation
I had no idea about this, until I read about it in the Baptist Times newspaper this morning. [how is it that something so important is not picked up by the general media?]
Last year, Lord Waddington inserted into the Criminal Justice Bill a clause allowing people to discuss homosexuality, without fear of being prosecuted. The government tried to have the clause rejected at the time, but failed, and so it has now tried to use the Coroners & Justice Bill currently going through parliament to try again.
Thankfully, the free speech defense clause will stay, after the House of Lords voted 186 - 133, and thus defeating the government once more.
Andrea Williams, founder of CCFON [Christian Concern For Our Nation] said;
Maintaining the free speech protection was of fundamental importance to Christians and to all of us who wish to discuss or criticize homosexual conduct freely, without the fear of 7 years in jail.
Had the government been successful, any persons/group [including churches] who discussed or suggested homosexuality was wrong, would be prosecuted under hate crime laws, and you would be unable to claim freedom of speech as part of your defense in court.
