WASHINGTON — The Obama administration and Russia have put a modern and friendly gloss to ties that have made genuine progress since the 2008 war in Georgia, but they still face pitfalls, analysts say.
The good atmospherics were created last week when Russian President Dmitry Medvedev enjoyed both his trip to Silicon Valley and his lunch with US President Barack Obama at a burger joint outside the US capital in Virginia. From AFP News
TWO WEEKS LATER
President Barack Obama, at a press conference on Tuesday, refused to comment on the alleged Russian spy scandal in the United States, Associated Press reports.
On Monday, the U.S. Justice Department announced that 10 alleged Russian secret agents had been arrested, five of whom have already appeared in a federal court in New York on charges of spying for Russia.
The 11th suspect in the alleged espionage case was arrested at Cyprus’ Larnaca airport on Tuesday. From Voice of America News
Did we really think the end of the cold war was the end of Russia's communist takeover of America? It is that much easier when your inside man is at the top!
MORE FROM VOICE OF AMERICA NEWS:
"At a news briefing, Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Philip Gordon said when President Obama began his efforts to re-set the U.S.-Russian relationship 18 months ago, some disagreements and problems were expected to remain and the spy case should be seen in that context."
"Gordon said the two sides have moved beyond the Cold War and toward a more trusting relationship,[??!!??] but apparently not far enough to prompt Moscow to abandon intelligence operations in the United States."
"We would like to get to the point where there is just so much trust [ain't that sweet]and cooperation between the United States and Russia that nobody would think of turning to intelligence means to find out things that they couldn't find out in other channels," said Gordon. "We're apparently not there yet. I don't think anyone in this room is shocked to have discovered that."
"Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told visiting former U.S. President Bill Clinton [sorry lefty that he is] he hoped the spy case does not damage recent positive gains in the bilateral relationship."
And we are looking at a continued program of disarming our nukes?
Senator, senator, what are you going to do about this?
That's what we thought!
Isa 29:9 ¶ Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
Isa 29:10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
