This question is mostly directed to Bro. Ben, but I hope others have some insight on this topic as well. (It isn't so much a theology question, but this seemed the best category for it.)
My wife recently started taking a class on homeopathy. Her basic desire was to learn about more natural ways to address the usual sicknesses we and our children face: ear infections, colds, etc. We are not against doctors, but think there are many times more simple and natural things can be done than what doctors recommend (e.g. chiropractic, nutrition, etc.). Homeopathy seemed to fit this. We even know a Christian couple who had a son with a vaccine reaction that was helped with homeopathy.
In the "Our Stand" post in the welcome area of the board, homeopathy is called out specifically as something that is not supported here. This got me wondering - why? The remark prompted me to do a bit of research on the internet and I just don't know what to think.
I have a background in math and physics, and as I understand it they are basically selling water (or whatever the inert substance is that the "active" ingredients are diluted with) once you pass the 12C or 24X dilution level. They fully admit this, and they admit they do not know why homeopathy "works".
So, my question is: Why is homeopathy not supported here? I am absolutely not suggesting that it should be. I am trying to understand the issue with it. I know there are localized abuses of it with pendulums and other things that seem to border on withcraft, etc. But, I do not think this is the predominant practice or belief.
So far I have just expressed reservation to my wife about it. This has been difficult for me because she is disappointed and her reasons for looking into it were proper. But, she is very understanding of my concern.
Thanks in advance for your guidance.
Bro. Kevin
