My youngest, Corban, was born with all sorts of allergies. He was plagued with asthma (he needed breathing treatments a few times a day - sometimes more), congestion, watery/snotty eyes, runny/snotty nose, little 'stones' inside his eyelids, and very very severe eczema (bloody patches all over his body; including his head). For the first 4 years of his life, the doctor put him on several different antibiotics The doctor never once mentioned that he could be allergic to something. It was by accident that I found out he was allergic to dairy. I started gaining too much weight and went on a vegan/strict vegetarian diet. For ease, the children did it with me and DH did it while at home. Lo and behold, ALL of Corban's asthma and allergy symptoms went away! This was very amazing to me - I can't even begin to count all the time we spent at the doctors since he was born. His skin started to get a little better too. A few months later, after I lost the extra weight, I 'treated' us all to pizza. Wouldn't you know it, soon after all of Corban's problems came back. We've been off dairy ever since. At the same time, all of my allergy's went away (I thought they were just non-stop seasonal allergies ...). I specifically remember telling my husband one day in the car "honey, this is going to sound strange, but I CAN BREATHE!" He thought I was nuts, but it was so new to me - I never knew one could breathe so clearly! The wheat and soy came a little later. Along with our new mostly strict vegetarian diet we started consuming a lot of soy and wheat. My oldest son, then 8, started acting VERY weird. He'd cry for no reason. He even told me he felt crazy. It was so hard to see him go through this. I happened to read an article about soy around the same time and thought .. hmmm, maybe it's soy??? So, I took out all the soy from our diet and guess what? Tylor was 100% better in a few days! I did not tell him I was doing it because I wanted a true reaction. He came to me a few days later and said Mom, I feel really good today. I could see a change in him too. So, no more soy .. except once in a while. As for wheat - last summer Corban did not look too good. I thought maybe he had celiac disease (gluten intolerant). So for the heck of it I took us all off wheat and other gluten products (spelt, rye, etc.). Not too long after, he started looking much better (his belly was VERY bloated, his skin was getting worse despite not eating any dairy, his eyes looked sunken in, etc.). Once off the wheat, my mind felt SO CLEAR. I had noticed my memory was not nearly as good as it used to be. Also, I could not concentrate good at all. And forget about multi-tasking... Now whenever I eat wheat, I feel slightly crazy the rest of the day. My DH doesn't even want to be around me. If I eat wheat, I try to eat it towards the end of the day. Same for my oldest, Tylor. He is a bear to be around when he eats wheat or soy.
NOW - I am not saying that if you have any of these symptoms that you have allergies!! I am in no way a doctor, just a mom that's been through a lot of trial and error. (that was my disclaimer!)
As for moisturizer - Along with Corban's bad skin, I'm sure you can imagine we needed a good moisturizer. We used the stuff the doctor's gave us, but it has steroids in it and all sorts of un-natural stuff. Besides, it didn't work. We tried everything at the store; then I discovered the health food stores and started trying stuff there. No luck. Then, last year, I started using extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil. That was the best so far, but still not what we needed. Now we use 100% organic, cold pressed, unrefined (that's important) extra virgin coconut oil. Besides having antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitical properties, it smells awesome! Yummy is a good word. I use it too - it works great on dry feet. I also use it for deodorant. Corban has been out of it for the last 5 days because we are waiting for our bulk food order (it should have been here yesterday ...) - I bought a gallon. Anyway, his skin is TERRIBLE once again - red and bleeding everywhere. Honestly, I can't see how he can smile, but he never complains. He has eaten more wheat than usual too bad timing for that.
Well, there's my 'allergy and moisturizer testimony' (haha). I hope it helps someone. It's been a very long journey, but it's great to see light at the end of the tunnel.
