I read your article about Christian liberty and it got me thinking, how do you know when you've become legalistic?
I read that legalism is following the letter of the law but losing the spirit. Does that mean going through the motions but losing the true meaning of Christ?
I've always been stumped by this question.
Thanks Brother Ben!

Bro Ben told me to post a reply to your question, he is very busy this morning.
Legalism is trying to work your way to heaven. Man doing good works to obtain salvation.Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Have a great day!

A very simple definition of legalism is: adding anything to Salvation.
Among the liberal churches and denominations we of the conservative, Bible-believing and Bible-teaching sort are often called legalists. There is not truth to that statement. You see people who want to live their lives as close to hell as they possibly can without actually slipping or stepping into it call those who make a concerted effort to live the way the Bible tells us we ought to live call us legalists. By the way a lot of them will be surprised where they end up when the die anyway.
In Christ, George
