I received a copy of this book, 'Me? Obey him?' yesterday by Elizabeth Rice Hanford. I was wondering if anyone has read it and what they thought of it.
I am very wary of reading books that twist scripture. I'm not saying this book does, but if anyone thinks it does I would like to know in advance. The same goes if anyone has found this book to be very good, it will encourage me to study it.
The main issue I am hoping it will shed some light on is obeying an unsaved Husband who asks us to sin. Some say you must obey in EVERYTHING and that God will not hold you accountable on that situation, but will hold your Husband accountable. (I know the story of Sarah obeying Abraham.) But the word says, he who loves father or mother or wife or husband or son or daughter MORE than Me is not worthy of Me (Jesus.)
So this issue has me confused. Are we to obey our Husbands in everything? Even when we are being asked to do what we know is sin. And if you say, well, only if its a BIG sin you do not obey, like murder etc. Well, then where is the line drawn??
To me so far, we are to obey, so long as we are not being asked to clearly sin. This to me seems why there is written about in the bible the cases of unbelievers who are not willing to live with a believer anymore, and leave. While there are other unsaved Husbands who are still willing to live with a believing wife. Jesus came to create division, not peace, and although obviously we are not to seek division, but to be peacemakers, the very fact that we follow and obey Jesus means there will inevitably sometimes be division with those who do not follow Him.
I have not come to a final conclusion on this matter. I am interested in hearing others thoughts. Last night after having a quick browse through the above mentioned book, I put it in my bookcase in my bedroom. It was well put in, not slidden in between the other books again, seperate from them, but still leaning up well and fully inside the bookcase. During the middle of the night when I was asleep I heard a loud bang. The book has been 'flung' out of the bookcase as if a hand had done it, and has landed on the floor. It was not a soft falling out, it was loud and it landed as if it has been 'propelled' out. These sorts of things do not happen to me, I am not a' hokey, pokey' pentecostal who sees the supernatural in everything. It was extremely odd because there is NO way that book fell on its own and especially the manner in what it did. It was so loud and forceful it woke me up. I only have two thoughts. Years ago I heard on a tape about a girl who was in absolute despair and as she was praying a tape flung out of her tape rack as if it has been propelled. She said there was no way it could of fallen out. The tape was exactly what she needed to hear to put her trust back in the Lord. This is the exact same thing that happened to that book and it made me remember that story. The other thought is that after the quick perusal of the book I had made that night before bed, I hadn't been hugely impressed, and put it in my bookshelf not intending to read it properly in any hurry, and with my life the way it is now, that would probably mean in another 6 months, if that, I would 'maybe' get around to reading it.
Either way, what happened made me pick up the book and decide I had better read it. I have never had that happen before and am still in a little shock it did. I only hope and pray it was God and not the evil one.
God Bless.
