Proposed euthanasia bill leaves too many vulnerable Charlie Butts (OneNewsNow.com) Wednesday, June 25, 2014 An opponent describes a New Jersey bill that would legalize assisted suicide as dangerous and in need of defeat. John Kelly of Not Dead Yet says vulnerable people will become more vulnerable overnight if the bill passes and is signed into law. That includes people with treatable depression and the elderly. “There's no provision in this bill that could spot or prevent abuse,” he tells OneNewsNow. “And if one doctor says no, or if even one psychologist says doctor assisted suicide is inappropriate for a person, people can just start doctor shopping.”
The limitations on who can be a witness to a written request for lethal drugs are such that an heir to the individual's estate could serve as the witness.
“And because of the fact that no witness is required when the drugs are taken, we actually will have no idea of what happens and whether there might be any coercion or even force in taking the drugs,” Kelly adds.
While the bill is currently a proposal, Kelly says once it becomes law it can easily be abused; plus, he says, it promotes a culture of death, not life.
“Because once medicine and the government start approving of people dying based on their quality of life, there's nowhere to stop and more and more people will be put at risk,” he says. This week, New Jersey Right to Life is ramping up a citizen campaign to convince lawmakers to reject the bill. - See more at: www.onenewsnow.com/culture/2014/06/25/proposed-euthanasia-bill-leaves-too-many-vulnerable#.U6yOzI1dXs5
