Let's keep in prayer the victims and families. Have you noticed that these massacres all seem to occur in states that have strict gun control laws? Oregon, California, Connecticut....etc?

I don't want to start an argument, but... Australia has much stricter gun control laws than any US State. We've had them since 1996. We also haven't had a mass shooting since 1996, which was what caused the tightening of the gun control laws in the first place. We also don't live in fear of being shot when we go to the shops... or to school...
This whole situation has just got beyond the point of comprehension for us now. Seriously, it's got to the point where I'd say most Australians would consider Pakistan a safer place to visit than the US. We just can't wrap our minds around what's happening over in your country.
Gun control laws aren't the end of the world. People in Australia still own guns. Yes, mostly they're people who live on large properties and need them for pest control, but it is possible to own a gun in the city, too. I know people, both in the country and in the city, who have guns. But not everyone owns a gun. Police don't carry guns. Gangs don't have guns. Generally, the authorities know who has a gun and they've undergone some sort of psych test. We currently have another gun amnesty so people who own firearms illegally can turn them in without any fear of prosecution.
You know what happened last time there was a gun scare in my state? It was six years ago and some kid took a water pistol to high school. The school shut down for three days as people worked to put procedures in place to prevent another gun scare. That is how safe I feel.
Meanwhile, how many under-five-year-olds in the US have killed parents or siblings with a gun this year?
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to rant for as long as this. But I really, really don't understand your mindsets.

Rachel, I'm glad you don't have this problem... yet. Terrorists are picking "soft targets" right now, places they can kill a lot of people without return fire that can stop them until a lot of damage is done. That's why they're targeting states (and nations) with strict gun control laws. Paris is another example.
Several incidents that haven't made big news are local crimes in which violence was attempted but stopped by customers with guns. Terrorists read local news as well as national. They know they can inflict the most damage in places that don't permit guns and in which return fire is unlikely. They have two purposes in these massacres: kill and create a momentum of terror-based fear to force conversions.
They will always be able to get their hands on an arsenal if they're bent on it, regardless of the laws. The average citizen here doesn't try to circumvent the law. There's a saying that's popular in the USA: "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." It seems in this age of terrorism, that saying has new meaning.
