Atheists fail to steal help from inmates

A state court in Florida has ruled that a Christian ministry has a better idea and a right to express that idea in a ministry helping prisoners.
Prisoners of Christ and Lamb of God ministries partnered with Florida to provide housing, food, other basic needs and referrals for employment for people released from prison. But an unhappy New York atheist group filed suit, says Becket Fund attorney Daniel Blomberg.
“They weren't coming in and saying, We have a better idea, we're going in and step in and take your place,” Blomberg says of the atheist group. “No, they wanted to force these ministries onto the sidelines, taking it away from a decade of successful ministry and service to the community just because of their faith.”
The atheists admitted in court that anyone could perform the same service – they simply suggested that people of faith shouldn't be doing it.
That suggestion, Blomberg says, is a case of discrimination.
The court has ruled that the state can partner with faith-based groups to accomplish the job, which may be a disappointment to the atheists, but Blomberg says it’s a blessing to former inmates and the ministries that are helping them remain out of prison.
“This is a huge win for former offenders,” he says, “who have been released back into society and who, instead of falling back into the old habits, are able to find a way to beat the cycle.”
