Just a few days after my wife began covering; we were coming out of a store back to our car and there was a man saying some hard language. When he noticed us; he immediately apologized and it struck up a conversation between me and the man. Point: This had not happened before until my wife began covering....I think people when they notice it understand something about the spirit of someone that goes with it. It was a wonderful testimony to us that we were doing rightly! However, I like the reaction and the opportunities that come about...I just want to make sure my heart does not go in the direction of a Pharisee so that I hope to be seen of men because we are different. I think we should safeguard ourselves against that....and keep an humble spirit and count it a blessing that we have learned what the Bible teaches on this. We need to make sure we do not want to get noticed for our "piety", but in order to be a witness. I believe the intention of the covering is not about being seen anyhow...it just happens to draw attention because not many people follow that portion of scripture. I bet John the Baptist got some funny looks as well though...

I agree. One of the important aspects of Amish people is; their dress is a reflection of their beliefs, so when we see them, we know who they are and what they stand for, it helps to identify them and their faith. How nice the man felt conviction for his behavior by your wife's apparel.

We had another good reaction. We were at Wal-Mart (where all Baptists, Mennonites, and other anabaptists go) and in the line the lady checking us out asked my wife about her covering...we then got to get into a conversation about it and why. The lady was real nice.....she said that someone had thought we were Amish....I guess sometimes one might think so...but....the reaction was good and we got to speak to someone else....we just have to remember to use the opportunity to not stay on the covering issue very long and change the conversation to one about salvation through Christ Jesus and a daily repentant life for Him. That is what is important.....not so much the outward as the inward. (though we should be performing the outward to the best of our ability)

That is wonderful that you were able to witness. I was just struck with a thought while re-reading this. I have heard the argument that covering is not for this day and age but a story like this makes me believe that covering was intended for THIS day and was in fact not so much for that time. (hope that makes sense). Perhaps God knew that some day covering would be a tool to help witness to others!

Amen sister, it truly is for this day. If you lived here in NC we would love to have you at our Mennonite Church. The people on this site, and especially the scriptures and testimonies given here on this site by others will strenghten your understanding in this area. The tracts on this site and the links to tracts are big helps as well.

I agree that when we share about our covering that we need to share about Christ too. I had never thought about that. Thanks for sharing.
