This morning my boss and I were having a slow day at work. It was not slow work-wise but neither of us had much inspiration or energy. We drove our little John Deere Gator out onto the football field to look for gophers. Beyond that area we have about 15 acres on our campus that are undeveloped. (I ought to mention that my boss and I are on the maintenance staff at First Baptist Church. The acreage is part of the Church and school campus.)
Our back property is probably the most beautiful within the city limits of Santa Maria that is not a city park. We have gentle little rolling hills and many, many large trees. Often we go back there just to relax and find peace within what God has given us.
This morning all of a sudden I looked toward the back and noticed something very unusual. There were a total of nine Turkey Vultures sitting on the fence and on top of the football scoreboard. They were absolutely beautiful. Some of you may be thinking that Turkey Vultures are really rather ugly but this morning those birds were just marvelous. We left the Gator and I walked over toward them with my digital camera. I was able to take some beautiful photos. Then we back-tracked, took a different road to the back and worked our way up toward them from the other side. Again they let me get very close with my camera. These huge birds put on quite a display for us of opening their wings and strutting as well as alternately taking off one at a time, flying for a bit and coming back.
When we decided we had best get back to work we were both revitalized. God, through the beauty of His creations saw fit to send those birds to renew us this morning. I cannot tell you what a wonderful thing it was to watch the majesty of those big birds.
Praise God for the beautiful things He has given us so that not only can we enjoy them but we can pause and recall just Who created them for us to enjoy.
In Christ,
George
