I was curious about how The Message Bible phrases 1 Cor 11:1-16, so I checked at one of the online Bible. All I can say is EEK! Yuck! It hardly discusses the issue of women covering our heads and the little bit it does say makes it seem as though it's not for today. Now I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, who uses this Bible but I really think they messed up on that one and probably most of all the other scriptures. I thought I was going to have a major conniption when I read it ! Anyway, I just thought I would share that with you all. Still shaking my head.

1 Corinthians 11
To Honor God 1-2 It pleases me that you continue to remember and honor me by keeping up the traditions of the faith I taught you. All actual authority stems from Christ. 3 In a marriage relationship, there is authority from Christ to husband, and from husband to wife. The authority of Christ is the authority of God.
4 Any man who speaks with God or about God in a way that shows a lack of respect for the authority of Christ, dishonors Christ.
5 In the same way, a wife who speaks with God in a way that shows a lack of respect for the authority of her husband, dishonors her husband.
6 Worse, she dishonors herself--an ugly sight, like a woman with her head shaved. This is basically the origin of these customs we have of women wearing head coverings in worship, while men take their hats off. By these symbolic acts,
7-9 men and women, who far too often butt heads with each other, submit their "heads" to the Head: God.
10Don't, by the way, read too much into the differences here between men and women.
11Neither man nor woman can go it alone or claim priority. Man was created first, as a beautiful shining reflection of God--that is true. But the head on a woman's body clearly outshines in beauty the head of her "head," her husband.
12The first woman came from man, true--but ever since then, every man comes from a woman! And since virtually everything comes from God anyway, let's quit going through these "who's first" routines.
13-15Don't you agree there is something naturally powerful in the symbolism--a woman, her beautiful hair reminiscent of angels, praying in adoration; a man, his head bared in reverence, praying in submission?
16 I hope you're not going to be argumentative about this. All God's churches see it this way; I don't want you standing out as an exception.
I like the good ole KJV. The new translators are always trying to explain away bible truths. They want the bible to fit in with modern America and it's ungodly practices.
The covering is a beautiful Christian symbol. It is humbling and at the same time a blessing to be identifyed as a Christian who is not afraid to take a stand for Christ and Christianity.

I was working the other day while listening to the local relatively conservative Christian radio station. Chuck Swindoll was on and he was speaking to women and for the most part the message was pretty good. However, he commented on the following verse:
Whose adorning let it not be that outward [adorning] of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; I Peter 3:3
He stated how thankful he was that the "newer" translation commitees were careful to add the word, only, in the verse so it reads:
Whose adorning let it not only be that outward [adorning] of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; I Peter 3:3
By "adding" this word you do two things: 1. You totally change the meaning of the verse. The gist of the verse is to teach a sister to be chaste in the areas of outward adornings, i.e., fancy hair do's, jewelry, and fancy clothing. 2. Also, you violate these verses of scripture:
Pro 30:5 Every word of God [is] pure: he [is] a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
Pro 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
By adding "only" these modern translaters change the meaning of the verse, thus removing the a sister's modest shield, and they expose themselves to be liars.
It just goes to show, that you have to be very careful of what you listen to because they will throw something your way so fast you won't catch it and they will cause you to believe...a...LIE!
Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said..."

Thank you Sister Darlene for posting the actual verses. I was in such a hurry this morning when I posted I forgot to do that. Thanks again. Oh and last night I bought a KJ Bible and the Christian bookstore/coffee house where Tim and I go on Wednesday nights.
