I have often said, speaking of deviant groups, error begets error. In our town there is a church called Believers Tabernacle. The people there follow the teachings of a early twentieth century (false) prophet named William Branham. They are also called Branhamites. This man claimed, by a vision, that he was the 7th angel of the Revelation, the 6th being John Wesley. He also claimed, by a vision in which Jesus spoke to him, that he was Elijah, whom Jesus spoke of in the Gospels. Here is a link explaining their deviant theology. www.letusreason.org/Latrain26.htm
This is a group deviating from Pentecostalism. When experience is exhalted over facts, you are bound to multiply the errors. Those who adhere to Pentecostalism need to be honest and examine this teaching in light of scripture.
When a group exhalts the teachings of a man, or an "experience" and downplays the role and authority of scripture, their error begets further and greater error. I did not know about this group until they purchased an old church just off the square here in Murfreesboro, TN. They recently bought property not far from my house for a new "tabernacle." This Branham guy claimed that the world would come to an end in 1977.
Deu 18:20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
Deu 18:21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
Deu 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
Another note of interest is groups that are started or greatly phostered by a woman. God never called a woman to be a leader of a New Testament, Bible-believing, church of the Living God. The scripture clearly says,
1Ti 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
1Ti 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
1Ti 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
1Ti 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Seventy-five percent of the tongue-speaking, Pentecostal/Apostolic movement is women. Furthermore, they just go to town, with many people breaking loose in tongues and different manifestations. Again, scripture is lightly esteemed. I worked with a woman once who claimed to be a Four Square Gospel (a Pentecostal-like denomination,) minister. I showed her some scriptures about women preachers and tongues, to which she replied, "I don't care what the Bible says, I just know what happened to me!" This is exactly what I'm talking about.
Earnestly desiring that people would know the truth, and the truth would set them free, Bro. Ben
